Moving to a new job and ill be able to take one day off a week, we had agreed Friday as I felt this is better to have a three day weekend. Baby will be in daycare 4 days a week so Monday -Thursday. Ive just been thinking now would I be better to ask for a wednesday off so baby only goes two days at a time with a break between? At the moment she attends three days a week Monday to Wednesday and this works well,
Anyone aby thoughts?

I'd stick with four days in a row, but not necessarily the Friday. My son really likes the consistency and routine of going in a row, he gets a bit confused and upset if I have the random day off in the middle. I currently work Tues, Weds, Fri and he's much less happy than when it was Mon-Weds all in a row.

The only reason I say not necessarily Friday is that it's the day that 90% of people take off with their kids, so everything is much busier and if you want to do toddler classes they get booked up quicker.

I have Mondays off and quite like that. Our nursery charges for Bank Holidays, so not having him in on a Monday saves us some money as well.

I like Fridays off, there is generally more things to do as a lot of people have it off so they run more classes/activities. We also like to go away for weekend breaks and a lot of the places we go to things are shut on Sundays/Mondays. I feel like I miss less work too as I do a compressed week and people slack off a bit on a Friday so it’s not so important if I am not there, in fact not many people have noticed!!

Monday is a good day to have off because if your nursery is closed for public holidays you're off anyway. Also you won't need to pay for the Monday public holidays, as many nurseries you pay for those even if they are closed, check your contract.

But Friday is a good day to have off too.

Mine also goes 4 days a week and I agree that having the days together is better for their routine. I picked Friday off as it suits my work better than Monday but you could also do Monday. We go to a swimming class on Friday morning then nap and maybe to the park or play in the garden in the afternoon.

Wednesday is a great day off, it breaks the week up for everyone. After a few weeks of doing 2 nursery days, day off and 2 nursery days again your little one will be well settled.

My son did Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and that worked fine. I actually liked having the break in the middle of the week!

Monday!
I have had Monday’s off as don’t have to pay for nursery bank hols and get pro rata holiday for the Monday bank hols to take when I choose.

DD has been in nursery 4 full days Tues-Fri since 13 months (about to start school) and it’s been great.

It really won’t make any difference. I’d think more for yourself if there is a more convenient day to have off. In my field, very few people work FT, but usual days off are Monday/Friday. It would be a pain to have Wednesday off because it would mean missing important meetings or having to work on my ‘day off’ because I couldn’t miss an important meeting. Friday is nice because you have a long weekend, but things are also busier on Fridays as it’s a day lots of people take off. If every day was the same, I’d probably want to have Wednesdays off personally as breaks the week up for me.

I agree with this. Monday is the best day to have off because providing you're in a job where you don't work bank holidays you'll have more choice in your annual leave days. + Same point about paying nursery fees for bank holidays even if they're closed.

autienotnaughty · 14/08/2024 09:31

I'd say Friday is the best day. Assuming you get bank holiday off it means you get 3 day weekends and not pay child care on those Mondays

paristotokyo · 14/08/2024 20:59

Definitely Mondays off. Nurseries are closed on bank holidays but you still have to pay. And I also didn't work a Monday and got those days pro rata back to have of my choosing when I'd want off, rather than having to use up a day of annual leave.
