Secondary drowning - im really panicking!

I was in the bath with my 2 year old, he was on his back in between my legs with me holding him. He kicked and I lost slight grip for a milisecond and water rushed into his mouth whilst he was on his back

I pulled him upright within a matter of seconds but he was coughing and spluttering, red in the face. Coughing for about 20-30 seconds? Can’t really be sure. Started talking pretty much straight away, sounded a touch out of breath but normal again within a minute

Totally fine and playing again, as well as drinking water from his cup. Maybe a couple of one / two coughs since but nothing more. Happened about 30 mins ago & he seems fine. But he’s due to go to bed in 30 mins & i’ve scared myself silly about secondary drowning incase he inhaled any water, do we keep him up?

He hasn’t coughed since & does seem normal in himself but didn’t happen that long ago

Phoned 111 & they all but laughed me off the phone & said just watch him

Has anybody else had a similar accident & child turned out ok? I feel absolutely terrible

Like you said, it was a millisecond. I'm sure he is fine, it's your guilt that's playing tricks on you. I still remember dropping my daughter when she slipped from my grasp for a second. They might be accidents, but we feel terrible about it.

Have you read a sensible website about what to do? It's ok to be a little vigilant.

I am surprised 111 were dismissive, even if they think no action is needed.

I did the same when mine was a few weeks old. I took her to an and e (first time mum!!) and they were very kind and checked her out but were not at all concerned. The following week we started baby swimming, where they purposely dunk the babies under water for longer than I did in the bath!! I honestly think your son will be fine xxx

They laughed down the phone at you?

Your baby will be fine. Wait till they learn to swim! 😂
