Advice on my sons clothing choices

My son is 6, nearly 7, he loves clothes, he loves choosing his own clothes to wear out of school, he’s a keen gymnast and is always cartwheeling around.
he likes to wear cycling shorts and crop tops which I personally have no issue with, but my ex husband and my mum disapprove saying it’s not good to let him wear cycling shorts as he will get picked on.
I really need some help and advice.
(my mother and I are not on speaking terms since my separation and has actually been more supportive to my ex)

He won’t get picked on for cycling shorts

Aren’t cycling shorts pretty standard clothes now for sporty dc? Where is he going to get picked on? What do his friends wear? I would say no to cycling shorts at some events but generally no issue.

Cycling shorts aren't an issue, no one will pick on him for that. A crop top outside of gymnastics and dance is more unusual and female or male I'd keep that for 'work' clothing to be used only for doing the sport as it's uniform

Having said that, I’d get him to have a look at Zara or H&M for inexpensive fashion for boys so he doesn’t get in a rut.

Cycling shorts, t shirt and trainers will be utterly unremarkable for a sporty set of boys.

Id say a crip top is a bit unusal on a boy and other boys will comment. Im not sure you need to police ths though, ime they self police and the first time a year 4/5 boy says why are you wearing a girls top he will nost likely want to switch to t shirt or tight fit top.
