Straw cup 11 months

I feel so stupid, I haven't introduced a straw cup yet. We usually use an open cup or normal water bottle guided by me so he does have the skill for using an open cup. But I don't give him an open cup to hold himself as I reckon he's a bit young at 11 months.

If he's got the open cup skill, will he pick up the skill of using a straw cup quickly?

Any recommendations for straw cups?

Why does he need to drink out of a cup with straw so desperately?

But yes, he'll pick it up fine.

I don't have any recommendations, I always think they're unnecessarily hard to clean and just stick with a normal cup/water bottle/sippy cup.

I've no idea why this has made you feel 'so stupid'.

We like the ones by Nuby. Think they pick up the skill quite easily.

It's not really a big deal, I don't think we've ever owned a straw cup....

If you want them to pick it up, dip a straw in the water and put your finger over the top so the water stays in. Put the other end of the straw in DCs mouth and remove your finger. Then they learn that liquid comes out of a straw. DD got it in a day

Well I must be even more stupid then as I didn't know this was a big deal and something that had to be introducing a certain age! Mine drank from an open cup fine, now drinks from a straw fine (he's 3). Can't remember when we started using straws but can swap between open cup and a straw no problems. I think I'd only be worried about them not acquiring this skill if they had some kind of muscle issues or learning disability, I bet most children just pick it up.

Why don't you let him drink from an open cup by himself at 11 months? He can't have "the skill" for it if he's not actually drinking from it himself. Just give him open cups but only fill them a quarter up to begin with so that it's not too messy. Mine had the EZPZ open cup from 6 months old. By 11 months your child is fine to drink from any open cup. Give him cups and jugs to play pouring with in the bath too.

As for a straw, it's not a skill he needs to learn. He'll figure it out fine. Buy a straw cup/bottle, or don't. It really won't make a difference to his life.
