Use potty again for independence?

I potty trained my 3 year old ds recently, only took a week and he was using the potty independently, although I had to wipe his bottom of course. He refused to use any toilet until we stayed at a friends house recently and had no choice, so I carried it on when we came back home. Thing is, I have to help do his wees (to angle his willy) and he can't reach to sit on the seat for a poo. He's ok with it but I feel it's a shame that he's lost his independence and I have to stop whatever I'm doing everytime he needs to go. Just wondering if I should stick with it or go back to using potty at home?
