Tripp Trapp high chair

Hi all

36 weeks pregnant, been looking at the Tripp trapp high chair. Realise it’s quite pricey but I love the idea of the newborn attachment to be at the table during mealtimes, and how long the chair will hopefully last too. Seen a deal with a 6 part bundle of all attachments for £419 which I think is best price I will get: just wondered whether anyone else had one and whether they’re good?

Get it second hand, I wouldn't pay that on a high chair. We got ours for £10 on Facebook. You'll get loads of people come on to say it's brilliant and you'll still be using it at 25 but the DC just refused to use our one after 4 as it was a 'baby chair'. The £13 ikea one was easier to clean and less bulky.

KnittingKnewbie · 03/08/2024 21:12

For a first baby you prob don't need the baby attachment. But with subsequent babies it's nice to plonk them there at meal times.

Millsmills · 03/08/2024 21:17

The hauck alpha is better imo. We had a tripp trapp growing up and we were always stubbing toes on the legs sticking out the back. I've got the alpha+ with baby seat for my own due in oct

Agree with the Hauck (although I did stub my toe in ours today 😆). Got ours free on marketplace but it’s about £60 new I think. I have 2 in fact, one for each child. I wouldn’t be too fixated on the newborn attachment as they may not want to be in it at all!
Also second the cheap Ikea high chair as I found it a lot more snug and better fitting with the insert for when they’re just started weaning.

MizzMarple · 03/08/2024 21:23

I have it with the newborn attachment and it’s the best thing I’ve bought. Wish I’d known about it for my first 2 babies.

OMGsamesame · 03/08/2024 21:26

I don't get what's so great about it. It looks uncomfortable (I wouldn't fancy sitting in it)

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 03/08/2024 21:30

I like mine and still use it as a spare chair when we have guests. I bought 1 second hand and 1 new after I really liked it and needed a second for dc2.

I didn't use the newborn attachment though and would say that's not an essential thing. You can't wean until they can sit up and then they only need the toddler attachment. I didn't use a tray either as I just put it up to the table.

I wouldn't buy this before having your baby, wait and see how life is nearer to 6 months in.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/08/2024 21:31

I was given one as a hand me down and I must say I don't think they are worth the hype at all. Large, heavy, and overpriced . I got rid of it and got an antilop like everyone else - it was great.

I agree.

DogsAndBirds · 03/08/2024 21:35

Look for one second hand - we have one with newborn attachment and did use that attachment a lot.

Initially in the kitchen so I could put him down while making a drink or a quick meal, later while we were eating at the table.

He is now in the toddler seat and we use it multiple times a day as he sits at it to eat at the table.

We do have an ikea high hair in the kitchen and it's easier to clean but the Tripp Trapp suits ours 1950s furniture a lot more so happy for it to remain long term in the living room/dining room.

Mmr224 · 03/08/2024 21:35

We have two, still using them with 3 and 4 year olds. We did use the baby seat and toddler seats, but bought it all second hand. We have the plain beech ones, and keep adjusting the foot rest and seats and kids grow, so they are at a good height at the table. We bought them from a family whose children used them as desk chairs until secondary school age. I'm still not sure they would be worth buying new, we were about 100 per chair plus a bit extra for the reins, baby set etc

wishIwasonholiday10 · 03/08/2024 21:35

I really like it and we used the newborn attachment loads as I hate eating one handed but it was nice to have DD at the table rather than in a bouncer on the floor - definitely worth it in my opinion. We are still using it at 2.

Hi all thanks for comments, seems a mixed bag. So one reason why I am considering is my brother has for my nephew and they used it from birth and loved it: they had some parts gifted however, and seemed really good when we visited, but then when I looked up price I just paused to think about it. The bundle I found works out about £60 cheaper than if I bought from John Lewis or stoke directly. They used the newborn part when we visited the first time and was great for SIL to entertain baby during meal while being able to eat as well.

i saw Hauke alpha was cheaper but had seen mixed reviews online including about a bar in it?

Loved ours. Used it for both of them from weaning age.
No hidden nooks and crannies to clean. They sat up properly in it as you can adjust the seat and foot plates to support them. They were with us at the table rather than removed from us with a tray in front of them. I think the youngest used it until the age of 8. Adults would sit on it as well.
Like others have said, you can pick them up 2nd hand for a good price.

johnd2 · 03/08/2024 21:39

We refused to pay premium for our oldest and got a normal only slightly fancy plastic one with it's own table. It was really bulky and a right faff.
We put him on a booster cushion on a chair so the new baby could have the old one, which was ok until he had long term visitors meaning we needed all the chairs. So we caved and bought a trip trap, and immediately wondered why we hadn't done it before. Much more compact, hardly any crevices for food to collect, easy to get up and down. So 3 months later we ordered a second for the baby and we haven't looked back.
The baby table was useful for us because our main table didn't really have space, as baby's need quite a lot of space to chuck their food around, and you also need sufficient "out of range" spots to put things you don't want them to grab! But if you have a big table you'll be ok without. We went to table mode once our guests went.
It's a big expense so I'd only recommend it if you can easily afford it, but it's not money wasted if you can.

Khanga27 · 03/08/2024 21:39

No luck second hand locally sadly. Affordability not an issue at all, but I’m normally quite frugal about things

Ikea high chair every single time. Always. So portable. So easy to clean. Works until you plonk them at table.

Edited

we sold ours for £50 a few years back so if you do end up buying new and it’s still in good condition you’ll hopefully sell it on easily.

Wentie · 03/08/2024 21:42

I don’t understand the argument that people say they used them until they were 5 or whatever. It still works out overpriced and expensive

Ive had 1 ikea high chair both kids have used until they were like 2 and then they just sat at a booster on a normal chair. Total cost about £20 and I didn’t have to have those heavy clumsy things in my dining room.

Mmr224 · 03/08/2024 21:42

I should say we use ours for meals and also for table time for jigsaws and drawing daily. We have a tiny flat, but decided we needed a table for meals, so we don't have a small table and chairs for eating/playing as no space. So we get a lot of use from the Tripp traps.

khaa2091 · 03/08/2024 21:43

Another fan, but wouldn’t buy new.
Newborn attachment was great as I could out the baby down safely whilst making a cup of tea, and it was much easier to pick her up from than a bouncer or floor mat (I had a Caesarean). It was also nice for her to be part of family meals. I didn’t use a harness for the high chair and still using happily with my 2 yr as an appropriate height chair.

xyzandabc · 03/08/2024 21:46

The newborn attachment didn't exist when ours were small, eldest is now 17 but used them from weaning until around 5 or 6. Sold one and DH still uses the other one in his workshop.

Easy to clean and they sit at the table with everyone else from the get go.

Garman · 03/08/2024 21:47

We have one that is ten years old and on its third kid, it’s absolutely brilliant well worth the money. Never had babyset or nest or whatever that bit is called, just had them sitting in it from 6+ months.

Grockle · 03/08/2024 21:47

We've had one since DD could sit up unaided. She's 8 now and still uses it. It grows with her and we love it.

Patatochake · 03/08/2024 21:48

Bought new and my dd still uses it at 15 though in her bedroom for studying, I think they are very comfy
