Tripp Trapp high chair

Hi all

36 weeks pregnant, been looking at the Tripp trapp high chair. Realise it’s quite pricey but I love the idea of the newborn attachment to be at the table during mealtimes, and how long the chair will hopefully last too. Seen a deal with a 6 part bundle of all attachments for £419 which I think is best price I will get: just wondered whether anyone else had one and whether they’re good?

I love the Tripp trapp.
Excellent advise already here.
Don’t buy it new, there’s really no need.

I bought mine secondhand on FB for a fraction of the price. Bought the newborn insert on vinted. Disinfected it. Good as new!

BangingOn · 03/08/2024 21:49

DS is 10 and still uses his. I sit on it sometimes too and it’s so comfortable.

Khanga27 · 03/08/2024 21:50

thanks all. I can see a few more suggested second hand. As mentioned, unfortunately having looked on Facebook marketplace and other sites I can’t see any second hand locally . Also I am in one of the due date chats and someone mentioned they bought second hand and when it came the parts didn’t fit together so I’m reluctant to look nationally second hand.

I don't get what's so great about it. It looks uncomfortable (I wouldn't fancy sitting in it)

I still use one of ours as a chair when I work from home with a cushion on the seat. Pretty good value for money!

Thewheelsonthebusgoroundandround · 03/08/2024 21:52

I still don’t really see the difference between the Hauck and the Tripp Trapp (apart from the price!!!). We’ve found the Hauck great and the reason I wanted that style seat as opposed to a booster seat as they grow was that I read about the importance of a foot rest when eating. It’s awkward to have your legs dangling constantly when you’re eating. The Hauck is fully adjustable too for the seat and foot plate and we made a footrest for the cheap Ikea one too.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 03/08/2024 21:56

Can you borrow the new born attachment bit from your brother?

GU24Mum · 03/08/2024 21:59

We're still using ours as adult chairs - have had them for a long time (Dc are teens). I find ours very comfortable and I'm not especially light at the moment!

Khanga27 · 03/08/2024 22:03

@SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress I believe they already have to another relative, however in any case that then means I don’t get this bundle deal and so I would only perhaps save £40 anyway. As I say it’s not affordability that an issue and would use for other children we had or sell on.

i think based on replies from those that have the chair I think will get it but will have a look at second hand again locally before committing to new. Thanks

Edited

There is a foot rest on the Trip Trapp. It's endlessly adjustable, which is why is it so great. Swap sections over when the foot rest is no longer needed.

DD is now 25 and I have hers for a desk chair. DB has our others for his DC now 6 and 9.

Verite1 · 03/08/2024 22:11

Our 7 year old still loves hers!

Yes, I was comparing the Tripp Trapp and Hauck which both have adjustable foot rests to just a booster seat on a normal chair. Definitely a good idea to have the foot rest.

Ikea high chair every single time. Always. So portable. So easy to clean. Works until you plonk them at table.

Yep. I was on DC number 3 before I discovered this. It was perfect.

Solasum · 03/08/2024 22:18

I use ours as a desk chair. Very comfortable

TheElectricCity · 03/08/2024 22:20

Our Tripp Trapp is probably our most used piece of baby equipment. I loved the newborn attachment as mealtimes are very important to us and it meant my DS could be at the table from us from the beginning. Now that he's 2, he uses it as a regular chair that's the right height for him and is sturdy enough for him to climb up and down from which he loves. They're definitely expensive but I would say they're worth it.

motherhoodmcrollercoaster · 03/08/2024 22:21

Hauck alpha here and we used the baby attachment as somewhere to plonk DD out of snoot height for the dog. Picked ours up on Fbook marketplace for the chair and then eBay for the baby attachment that can be converted into a floor bouncer too. It was a godsend for us not just for doggo safety but I ended up with nerve damage in my pelvis so couldn't get to the floor very easily!!

brickbybrickbybrick · 03/08/2024 22:21

We picked up two for £50 but was an hour away on the coast - used it as an excuse for one last weekend away before baby came as it was too good a deal to pass up! To memory, any made after 2003 fit the current baby and newborn inserts, easily checked with the serial number on the bottom. We found the newborn insert wasn't very popular when our LO was tiny but you can angle it down from 2 months and now he loves it. So handy to pop him down at a higher level than a bouncer and it's really nice to have him sit at the table with us at breakfast! Can't wait to move onto the baby set for weaning. Best of luck with the next few weeks x

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 03/08/2024 22:27

We have one that my mother in law insisted on buying for the precious first grandchild 😄 it's completely overpriced but it is good, I like it. But if I was buying a high chair myself, I'd just get the ikea one. The tray is excellent and great for small baby weaning with the cushion insert thingy. I seek out cafes that have ikea high chairs in preference to those stupid wooden ones.

Khanga27 · 03/08/2024 22:42

Thanks again all. Just been looking again on Facebook marketplace and also eBay and had no luck locally still. Looks like will be new.

I have a couple of friends with ikea chairs who said they wouldn’t recommend as their children hated being in it and they couldn’t get their children to settle so had to change. I suppose it shows you can’t know for sure what a child would or wouldn’t like, rather than it showing much about the chair given the recommendations here.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/08/2024 22:45

I don’t understand the argument that people say they used them until they were 5 or whatever. It still works out overpriced and expensive

I don't either - and yes, you can still sit on them when your children have outgrown them. I have politely sat on them in people's houses. You can sit on anything if you want, but they aren't as comfortable as just a normal chair. I think people use them longer because they have invested so much.

JaninaDuszejko · 03/08/2024 22:48

My 3DC are teenagers and still use theirs. It didn't save us money though, we bought one for each child. We also have the IKEA one which is excellent and is now stored in the attic between visits by small children. No other high chairs compare.
I would say for the Tripp Trapp the only accessories you need are the babyset and the harness. Don't bother with cushions or newborn sets or trays.

Khanga27 · 03/08/2024 23:24

Sorry just to add, as I noticed some people have recommended against the newborn attachment: another reason why we want the newborn bit is that we have a dog, and thought for the room it would be better that than a lower bouncer chair for example, which we have had gifted and we plan to use elsewhere in house away from the dog (it’s also why we haven’t got a Moses basket and have opted for a travel cot instead for daytime naps).

Loved ours and they were not packed away until the children were mid teens.

Get it second hand, I wouldn't pay that on a high chair. We got ours for £10 on Facebook. You'll get loads of people come on to say it's brilliant and you'll still be using it at 25 but the DC just refused to use our one after 4 as it was a 'baby chair'. The £13 ikea one was easier to clean and less bulky.

Wow that's amazing, where I am, second hand ones sell for £70-90

I thought we were the only ones who hated the IKEA chair. It's legs took up so much space it didn't tuck under the table.
Really liked the Tripp Trapp, especially them eating from the table with the family.
Sorry to be the cliche but it's still used for homework and colouring 9 years later.

Mmr224 · 04/08/2024 08:05

They are often second hand on eBay too, with a postage cost, so worth a look. But if money really isn't an issue, you could buy the set new and if you're planning to have a second child keep an eye out for a 2nd one second hand as you won't need all the extra bits for the older child.

We love that the kids can pull them in and out and can just climb up themselves to do a jigsaw, get down for toilet etc. I think it really helped with using cutlery properly as they could reach easily. Our children are about 25% for height, so quite short but quite capable.

They had standard hight chairs with trays at grandparents which never fitted well at the table for dinners etc. and they always are better when we were sitting together at a table compared to being given food in a high chair tray without anyone else eating. They are now in normal chairs with cushions at grandparents as have outgrown the 'baby' chairs that were there. They still don't eat as well there, as more difficult to reach, arms are at wrong height etc for the table. With the Tripp Traps at home, we just adjusted the seat and foot rest after each growth spurt to make them still at a good eating height.

I haven't seen the hack option, but if you can get them on and off the table independently and adjust seat and foot rest, it is probably equivalent to the Tripp trapp for those functions.

We also use the chairs to cook together as the kitchen is a tiny galley one, and we chop food together at the table, make rolls and cakes there etc.
