Invest some money for him, in something like Premium Bonds, and give him an empty cardboard box and some scrunched up paper.
He ill love those as a 1 yr old, and will love having the money at 16 / 17 /18

Or, you know, do that... and also get a scuttlebug and a few toys for less than £40 all in.

we are facing GC first birthday soon and have decided on a small actual gift.. they get so much and soon tire of toys but are setting up a little savings account for him and will continue with a small gift on special holidays and birthdays and then cash in the bank.

They don't need anything for a first birthday, they are unaware anything special is going on. The first birthday is for the parents, grandparents, friends and other family members..

Pay for the party.. and hang on to your money for when the know what's going on

We asked all of our friends and family to buy their favourite book and write a dedication in the front, was lovely to create a library of infant to adult books
