Baby scratched face how long does it take to heal?

Cut my LOs nails today and then a few hours later I noticed a scratch around his eye!

How long does it take to heal? I’ve been putting breast milk on it since I seen it and also will it scar?

LO is 10 weeks old and still not sure how he’s done it.

A few days. Happens all the time.

It will heal quickly, probably be hardly noticeable within a few days. I somehow managed to get a really deep scratch in my DS's cheek with my wedding ring when he made a sudden movement as a baby and I was devastated, it looked horrendous! I was so surprised how quickly it healed and completely disappeared.

My newborns were always covered in scratches, their nails seemed to grow overnight and they'd wake up with scratches. Takes no time at all to heal and no scars

That’s good to know. How quick do you think it’ll heal and how old was your DS? What did you use on it if anything?

Thanks - Did you use anything on the scratches to speed up the healing?

@HazelEagle he was probably around 6 months, and it was really hardly noticeable after a couple of days, and then I'd say it gradually just faded away completely over the next week or so. I didn't use anything on it, although since then I have used kelocote gel for a scar on his head when he had a fall and needed it glued together. Not sure how much the gel helped, but it's now only noticeable if I look really closely.

My baby granddaughter scratched herself a few times when only a few weeks old, the scratches healed very quickly without using anything on them - maybe in three or four days. She liked to suck her fingers so hated having the cuffs of the baby grow pulled over her hands.

I'm impressed you've got through 10 weeks with no scratches. My DS was always scratching himself as I struggled to trim his nails. Didn't put anything on them and have zero scars.

ThisOldThang · 27/07/2024 20:04

I accidentally cut the very tip of my son's finger off when trimming his nails with clippers. There was a lot of blood and I obviously felt horrible.

It healed up completely in a few days and there's no lasting scar/damage.

Young kids scratch themselves all the time. Don't worry about it.

A few days and even if it scars it really won’t last

my daughter was forever slicing her face, often leaving scar tissue. But it was all gone by the time she was 2

meganna · 27/07/2024 20:06

@HazelEagle nope, absolutely nothing. They were just very superficial scratches.

Never used anything - just let it heal. Babies and toddlers end up with numerous scratches.

My 7 week old has scratched his face a few times, most recently today. Healed in days with no intervention and totally gone now.

I would barely have registered that as a mark, I’m pretty sure most babies have a few scratches on their faces at any given time, it’s very normal, I wouldn’t worry.

It was red’er yesterday and have been putting breast milk on it, occasionally. However I’m hoping it’ll fade in a few days as that’s what most of the replies suggest

I probably wouldn’t have ever noticed that - she will get lots more scratches, bruises and scabby knees and elbows.
What has worried you about it?

Sunshineafterthehail · 28/07/2024 17:35

Going forward no need to cut just peel the nails off...

Yeah it’s just the first time it’s happened so wondered how long it takes to disappear that’s all
