I am bored and want to talk slings.

Dd is getting too big and doesn't want to be carried very much anymore.

I love my stash and I am now 17 wks pg.

Really looking forward to putting this one in a sling and sniff her scrummy head.

Which ones do you have? I love my wraps but didn't really get on with my pouch/ring slings (possiby because I got a cheap pouch from ebay and it didn't fit properly, should've gone for the coorie really)

Indith · 13/04/2008 16:23

I have another 1,250 words to write, this is me signing in and escaping or I shall feel terribly guilty over cake tomorrow for not working .

See you in all your slinging glory tomorrow

kiskideesameanoldmother · 13/04/2008 17:14

heh, heh, heh, indith. I was planning to bring only one carrier for dd's (and my) convenience.

is there anything you would like me to bring along so that you can try out?

Clairey: I have a pouch that I handmade and at first it was too big but then dd got big and it worked out great to do hip carries with her around the shops. Can remember the two of us flicking through the racks at Next and thinking how she'd have been so whingy stuck in a pushchair looking at knees.

I now have only one other pouch which is a New Native organic. You are right. if pouches are not sized right, they are useless.

I have an, erm, largish assortment of wraps and 4 Mei-tais.

I also have one ringsling.

No no didn't mean it like that

kiskideesameanoldmother · 13/04/2008 17:23

no, i don't mean it like that. You are welcome to try something out. maybe a shorter wrap to do ruck carries with? I remember you saying how the ellaroo you have is longer and a bit of a faff to ruck with when you are trying to do it quickly.

Best not, you'll just tempt me and I don't really have the money. I'm going to the meet on Thursday anyway.

TeenyTinyTorya · 13/04/2008 17:50

I have a 13 month old son, and although I have a pram I prefer to carry him. He's walking as long as I hold his hand, but he's not able to walk alongside me yet.

I am currently using a backpack type thing, but it's quite ungainly. I'd really prefer a hip carrier type thingy, or a wrap kind of thing that I could use on my back. As you can probably tell, I'm not very up on the different types, so I'd love some recommendations!

charchargabor · 13/04/2008 18:50

I have an 8 month old daughter, and haven't used a pram for about 5/6 months, although DP uses it when he takes her out. I have a mei tai, a stretchy wrap and a ring sling. I bought the ring sling when she was newborn, but never got the hang of it. I'm going to try it with a hip carry soon.
My wrap is new, and MIL made it for me. It's really comfortable, but I still need some practice I think. She feels a bit wonky in it, and the straps seem to slip backwards a bit so her legs end up feeling like they're dangling. One leg always seems lower than the other as well. Any ideas?

Fillyjonk · 13/04/2008 18:53

oooh I am from the dark side

I have a baby bjorn

and a ergo

they are fabulous

FrannyandZooey · 13/04/2008 18:56

Can I come in? No baby to carry right now, but carried ds everywhere until 2 and then on and off till about 3
I had a lovely time with my Huggababy

kiskideesameanoldmother · 13/04/2008 19:01

filly, how old is your ds (dd?) as i am wondering how you are get on with a BB.

Torya, at 13mos I would go with a Mei-tai or a Soft Structured Carrier (SSC). they have a smaller learning curve than a wrap and at 13 mos, babies can be wiggly too which means it is quicker to get them in the carrier. I would go with a MT because you can carry them higher on your back with at least one tying technique which means he can see over your shoulder to look ahead as well as sides. with SSCs they seem to be able to see only to the sides which my dd hates but some babies don't seem to mind.

where is the meetup on thursday, indith? I may come along. I have lost track a bit of the meetups.

muppetgirl · 13/04/2008 19:16

I have a hugabub and loved it when ds was a tiny gorgeous smelling newborn but he now wants to look about -he's 5 1/2 months now- can anyone recommend something for his age or weight - 19lbs - or even a different way to tie the hugabub?

muppetgirl · 13/04/2008 19:18

DD - My hugabub was fab and used loads. DS was 10lbs at birth and it was amazingly comfortable. I wore it all day when we went to London. Up and down escaltaors and in and out of taxis.

Fillyjonk · 13/04/2008 19:33

well kiki ds is nearly 5

dd1 is nearly 3

dd2 is 8 weeks

I do love my baby bjorn, I have tried most well known slings in my time and have made some too but the bjorn really works for me. I use it to about 5 months then the ergo.

I have a coorie for around the house, and a loft full of slings (must ebay)...

I know the baby bjorn isn't cool though-would never go to a slingmeet with one. jesus a pushchair would be better...

dizzydixies · 13/04/2008 19:38

is this a good one?

moby

dizzydixies · 13/04/2008 19:39

or this - says good for heavier babies and one size fits all?

tricot

Fillyjonk · 13/04/2008 19:47

OK re the tricotti

no, its a but shite, for two reasons

first, it not adjustible. close baby carrier is much better-virtually exactly the same, but adjustible.

second, I personally don't like the sling going between their legs in the newborn carry, I think it forces them too far apart. Its easier to get a newborn in securely to the close baby carrier without the fabric going between their legs, IME

third, it doesn't feel very secure

but fourth, and this is the killer for me, it is made of jersey fabric and stretches a LOT, so it doesn't fit that well after a while.

So I don't like it

Moby I didn't get on with either...

gosh I am hard to please

muppetgirl · 13/04/2008 19:47

That's exactly like my hugabub. I just need to turn him round. He loved the newborn bit but really doesn't want his head poked in now.

ib · 13/04/2008 19:47

I have a baby bjorn too. And an ergo. And a ring sling. And a wrap.

TBH the bb did hurt my back but was a lifesaver until ds could sit up. He had reflux so had to be upright the whole time and the bb was the only way he could play.

Fillyjonk · 13/04/2008 19:49

lol at me criticising the wrong sling

I find long fabric slings very hard to use personally, but I have several kids close in age. Also I find them too hot. This is probably a matter of circumstance though.

Would personally avoid jersey fabric slings though which I THINK the moby is, not sure re the tricot, I though it was woven? (they are much better)

muppetgirl · 13/04/2008 19:49

Fillijonk- when did you find it stretched? Whilst you were wearingit? I wore it all round London and ds was about 15lbs or so then and it was fine. Only re tied it when I took him out for a feed -couldn't figure out how to bf with him in it!

Did find we got hot though and had to think about what we both wore...

Indith · 13/04/2008 19:50

The Botanic Garden's Kiskidee from 1ish I think, in the visitor centre if raining or at the table by the water if not.

Dizzy for a heavier one go for a woven fabric like the didymos or ellaroo which won't stretch lik ethe jersey ones will.

Fillyjonk · 13/04/2008 19:52

no its ok muppet I got the wrong sling-was critocising the tricotti

dizzydixies · 13/04/2008 19:53

all advice gladly received as dc3 will be here in height of summer and I am a hot potato and am also rather large and my last dd was >11lbs and this one looking to be the same
