Smoking parents and kids

Where I live I often see adults openly smoking around their young DCs; young parents smoking with and around their DCs and freely in front of their own parents (ie the grandparents of their DCs). Like multi generational open smoking. Also have a neighbour who openly smoked throughout her pregnancy.

Having been a secret smoker for years (gave up when pg with DC) and even now at a ripe old age having never admitted it to my parents, I'm fascinated by the mentality. I understand first hand it's an addiction for some but do people just not believe the dangers, otherwise why wouldn't you do everything to stop your DC and GC doing it?

I'm curious, why do people do it?

They smoke because they're addicted, and either can't or don't want to quit.

It's mad they do it in front of their DC though, why would you not hide it?! It's so bad for children to be around a smoker, and massively increases the chances of them taking up smoking when they grow up. Maybe they're just feckless.
