What age did you start potty training?

And what method did you use? How did you know they were ready? Did it take long?

I have almost 2 year old and wondering when and how to start...

Month they turned 2 with my first using Oh Crap poorly training book. Starting with my second (2.5 year old) this summer…

Just before turning 2 using oh crap, with some adjustments!

We got a potty and some potty themed books to read together. Had a long weekend with him in the nip, lots of prompting, watching for signs that he needed to go. Big big praise when he went on the potty. No anger or stress with accidents.

We didn't ply him fluid or take him every 15 mins or anything. Didn't use stickers or chocolate.

If he needed a poo we read a story or watched a get Duggee so he'd sit and relax long enough to go.

We went from naked to commando to pants. Took a travel potty and changes of clothes everywhere! Nappies for naps for a couple of weeks then he'd refuse them so just go on potty as soon as he was up. Nappies at night for about 3 months but then he was (somehow!) dry at night and would just do a massive wee in the morning.

We did take him to the toy shop the weekend after starting, for doing so well with it all. That helped keep the novelty up a bit I think because after the initial thrill of "big boy using the potty" wears off it can just be an annoying thing that interrupts them playing 🤣

First child 2.4 used Oh Crap book loosely, it took weeks.

Second child 2.2 followed Oh Crap to the letter and it took days.

2 years 3 months; I followed Amanda Jenner's Potty Training Magic. She recommends going straight into pants rather than train them to be naked and then re-train them to wear pants. We had lots of accidents over 3 days, then all of a sudden the accidents stopped and that was that.

The book is heavy on prep - getting your child to pick their pants, involvement in the sticker charter, choosing the potty etc. You really need them to be on board or they're not going to get anywhere.

Pirate Pete/Princess Polly have a book on potty training for the child to read. It was a big hit in our house (as are the other books in the series!)

2 years 10 months. We just winged it really - pants I knew he’d love and stickers for every wee on the potty and a biscuit for poos 😅 Gir him to sit on it every two hours.

He had it at home within a couple of weeks. Nursery took a bit longer.

18 months with dc1, 21 months with dc2 (timing dictated by nice weather and when I had holiday).

Used Oh Crap and they both nailed it in 3-4 days. They displayed no “signs” of readiness beforehand other than they were both early to speak so could communicate well by then.

Don’t wait until they are closer to 3 as they are more wilful and less compliant by then!

2 years 3 months with DD using oh crap. Decided to give it a go and see how she went and she smashed it. Got an 8mo DS now so we'll be going through it all again in a couple of years
