play doh
craft stuff (pom poms, glitter, etc)
does he like any characters from childrens tv? - you could get him something related to that

A magnetic fishing set? I have a 3yo DD but she loves it - will spend ages 'catching' the fish in a bowl of water. I'm planning to buy one for a friend's son who will be 3 in May.

ds will be 3 next saturday and we got him a pedal go-kart, we were going to get him a bike and took him to halfords and he went straight on a go-kart so we got him one instead of a bike.

fludnelb where do you get the fishing set? My dd's 3 next week and is not into girly toys. The only thing she plays with is her bike

my ds just turned 3. He has a zillion diggers and is always delighted with more!

He loves anything crafty and actually wanted aquabeads but we didn't get them cos his little sis would eat them! I have avoided moon sand for the same reasons as you although it does look fun.

He got the play doh hairdresser which he loves
Swingball
Goalposts

For Christmas he got an Orchard Toys giant tractor floor puzzle- he loves that and you can get a digger one too.

Do you have astomp rocket?

Cheap and great fun. We gave DS1 a stomp rocket for his 3rd birthday and he loves it.

Tip: it comes with a little stand but it's much more fun for them to hold the hose bit up in the air while they jump onto the pump.
I would totally recommend this.
