So I need some help if possible. My little monkey is 20 months and I don't know whether I should be concerned that he isn't saying any words. He was saying mama and baba but has stopped l. We have tried so many things to help him say words but nothing. The list of things we have tried so far are -

  1. Trying to read books but he doesn't take any notice and he just wants to rip them up including hardback books so we haven't bought any more books
  2. I have bought some flash cards which slot in to a electronic device and says the word but all he wants to do is rip the cards or bend them or play with the device because he likes the buttons on it
  3. Ms rachel or ms apple - he loves watching them and we have played ms Rachel since he was like 7 months old but he just smiles and watches it. We also play learning videos - mainly alphabet videos
  4. When we are playing, I say for example 'car' if we are playing with one and I will say the colour or 'apple' and I say the colour etc but that isn't working either

Not really sure what to do. I want him to go to nursery when he is two but my partner is to worried to send him there but he will make friends, learn words etc but the only problem is he still can't walk and when I did go to view some nurseries (I was hoping it might change his mind) they got really funny that he can't walk so it put me off a bit. The HV is coming over on 24th July just to see whether he needs to be referred for physio but he does stand up a lot and sometimes stands by himself but he won't walk. We do try to help him and cheer him on but he just wants to crawl which is fine

Chat with your health visitor or GP if you are worried about his development. How is his understanding in general - can he point to things in a book like animals or different objects if you ask him to?

My DD is a late walker and we finally got referred to physio at 18 months but she wasn't standing or pulling up at all. It's a good sign if he is standing by himself and he may just be taking his time. My DD's speech has also been a bit on the slow side but she has picked up a lot of words recently and her understanding was quite good before she was saying many words.

For nursery my DD started in the baby room at 12 months when she wasn't mobile at all. She is now 2 and in the next room up where she is the only one not walking. The nursery staff are helping support her walking and so far it hasn't been a problem for her but I admitt I was worried when she moved out of the baby room. She still seems to enjoy nursery and happily bum shuffles around the room and outside in the garden.

He doesn't know any animals and he doesn't point etc. we have so many educational books but they are all ripped but I do point and say the animals on the screen when he watches tv but he doesn't take any notice.

The HV is aware so she is coming round but she didn't seem too concerned. She said if he isn't walking when he turns two, she will refer him. All we can do is keep trying and hope he does soon Smile
