Weaning off nipple shields - how was it for you?

Hello! I’m currently weaning my baby off nipple shields (he’s 6 months but was premature so 4 months adjusted) and we’ve used shields since birth due to him being so tiny, tongue tie (which has been released etc) but he seems to be able to latch ok without now.

The last few days I’ve not used the shields at all really and I’ve noticed the time spent feeding has dropped dramatically (I track on Huckleberry) - Usually it was 3.5-5 hours a day but the last few days it’s been about 2-2.5 hours! I’ve noticed he only feeds for about 5 minutes each side (both sides during a feed). I’m keeping a close eye on nappies and they seem normal, he seems content, sleeping well etc.

I am hoping this is just because he is far more efficient without shields but interested to know how others found weaning off shields and whether you experienced the same?

I had exactly the same thing, my daughter weaned around 4 months from nipple shields and she fed for much less time after than before. Good luck getting off of them, I've found breastfeeding so much more convenient without them!

Yes I found the same. Much quicker and much less reflux after too as I think he didn't take as much air in.

Thanks both! I am finding my nipples feel a bit bruised after a few days of no shields, not sure if this is normal as they need to toughen up or poor latch??

I found the same, it did stop after a week or so but if it carries on for you it might be worth going to get your latch assessed.
