First welly boots

We had a nice walk today and got caught in the rain. Ds then decided to have his first splash in a huge puddle, I then realised I should get some wellies!

I’ve been eyeing up crocs or bogs as recommended here on mn but on the bogs website it says they are no good for puddle jumping. So would they be pointless in getting and why are they so highly rated if you can’t splash in them?

Also want to add that ds didn’t get his first shoes until end of May and does occasionally still fall over his feet when running around still. So I probably need something light I presume and I don’t want to spend loads if he will grow out of them really soon or should I just wait until winter. I didn’t even consider wellies at this time of year when buying his shoes!

I probably wouldn’t spend a fortune on wellies as toddler wellies have a hard life and kids feet grow so quickly. My DC’s first wellies (in the summer) were ankle height from a supermarket. If they’re really determined to splash, no wellies are 100% toddler splashing proof! So take a spare pair of trousers and a spare pair of socks in your bag. But you’re probably still taking spare trousers anyway and probably will for a while anyway.

I moved DC into mid-calf wellies in the winter and I’ve kept them in mid-calf wellies this summer but they are two so have been walking for a little while and mostly steady on their feet. They still fall over their own feet for a while though.

Another vote for ankle high supermarket wellies! They cost a fortune and little feet grow very quickly - I'd imagine you'll be getting another pair before the winter is through (at least!) X

I found Bogs to be good when they first started walking as mine found it very tricky to walk in normal hard soled wellies to start with. Bigs are flexible and soft however yes they are not waterproof and are quite short so would not be good for puddle jumping! I don’t really understand it either tbh but maybe it’s so they are softer and easier to walk in.

Crocs. They're really light

Your local NCT might have a welly library. You hire good quality second hand wellies that your little one will grow out of very quickly.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I managed to bag a second hand pair of crocs wellies for £5 so hopefully they will be ok even though it looks as though the weather will be warming up?! I will get supermarket ones in the future or when he grows out of these and perhaps get bogs nearer the winter then.

@Legogirl48 initially wanted the bogs first for flexibility, but it is strange how they are not waterproof and unsuitable for puddle jumping isn’t it!

Thank you @WhereIsMyLight lots of helpful advice and yes still managed to soak through his splash suit so thankful for spare clothes to change into! I’m also glad to hear they still fall over their feet for a while, I always worry his shoes aren’t fitted correctly when he does but they seem ok when checking. I think it’s because his little legs move faster with excitement he can’t keep up with himself!

@Cantgetausername87 thank you for the advice it’s good to have an idea of how many shoes/ wellies he’ll be going through- I honestly have no idea how quickly little feet grow but they do look like they are getting longer by the day!

fantastic suggestion @5475878237NC I had a google search but couldn’t find anything around my local area but I will continue to check and see if anything comes up.

Thank you everyone, it’s amazing how quickly and how much more stuff they need as they grow! X

I wouldn’t worry about the weather warming up! Toddlers love wellies and could also find mud in the Sahara! My DD has been in her wellies regardless of the weather, on nice days she’s just rocking the festival chic.
