I am a happily divorced single mum of one. My DD sees her father alternate weekends and Wednesday nights term time. When I divorced I reverted back to my maiden name, my marriage had been v toxic and unhappy. My DD was the best and only good thing to come out of it. At the time I asked my ex if we could double barrel her name, she was 5 and he refused. Because of the cost at the time of fighting him on this issue, I let it drop.
Fast forward 5yrs, she has today asked me if she can double barrel her name adding my family name on to hers. Although absolutely delighted, and happy for her to take my name. I have decided to wait a week before I contact solicitors and get the ball rolling through the courts. Her father is due to remarry at the end of the month and I wish to wait until he gets back from honeymoon before telling him I am starting the process. But obviously I do need a conversation before this with the solicitor to find out what's involved, time period, cost etc. Plus I need to be sure that my DD wants to go ahead.
I have asked her why now, she states it because some of the kids at school have made comments and she would like to have the same name as me. I'm not worried about all the paperwork and the time it would take to change the name. I just want her to be sure because I know her father will object again.
Has anyone been through this process? Especially with an older child?
