Toddler hair

My DD is 3, she has very fine, thin hair. It covers her whole head but her scalp is visible when I put it up. She had different layers where I guess it’s growing at different rates from different areas. It grows in length but thickness wise it’s just so so thin. Does anyone know if this a sign of what her hair will be like for childhood/adulthood in terms of density? My hair is also very fine and thin but I have a lot of it, and my husbands hair is very thick. I know in grand scheme of things it really doesn’t matter, I’m just wondering at what point hair thickness is set? TIA

following - as my daughter also 3 (4 in Aug) has exactly the same hair as yours. I look back at pictures from last year and doesnt look like it has grown at all! she is happy and healthy and i know thats all that matters but just so you know you are not alone. (i see all the other girls in her pre-school with thick long hair and cant help but feel a little sad for her when she asks me if she has long hair!)

Exactly the same here. DD is just gone 4. Very similar to OP, I have fine hair but quite a lot of it and at the same age had much more hair.

DH has loads and loads of thick hair as does MIL. New baby has lots of hair already and only 7 months.

When I look at pictures it has definitely grown in length since last year and I think it's getting thicker at the top but she still has much less than most girls her age and asks a lot when she can have a plat x

Thanks @Tryingtoconceivenumber2 @hippychickreno, as you say you see other little girls at nursery with thick long hair and I just think ohhh that’s sad for my little one. She asks for a plait or bunches and there just isn’t enough to do it really. My 1 year old little boy doesn’t have much, so they clearly get their hair gene from me ☹️ I was hoping people might say oh yea quite common in toddler hood it’ll get thicker etc!

Yeah it is hard for them. We can get decent ISH bunches now and have progressed on to a ponytail. I've googled it so many times and no real information on there on how to help hair growth for children etc x

I don't know how old I was here but I had really fine scrappy hair, you can see bits of my scalp in the photo. As a baby I had virtually none! It was never enough for a ponytail or plaits when I was little until I was probably 5/6 ish?
This is my hair now - it's still fine but I have a lot of it!

Your hair is gorgeous !! Do you dye it or did it change colour naturally? My dad was flame red when younger but it's almost brown now in his 50's!

spikeandbuffy · 02/07/2024 07:41

@vacay it changes colour naturallly and in different light

skkyelark · 02/07/2024 09:09

DD1 didn't have particularly thin hair as a toddler, but I'd say it at least doubled in thickness between 3 and 5 – there's definitely lots of it now!

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 02/07/2024 09:58

@spikeandbuffy your hair is absolutely stunning. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for DD x

Shleepymummy · 02/07/2024 19:40

@spikeandbuffy id say my DD has less than you did as a bubba, hard to see. But your hair now is amazing!

Any update on your daughter’s hair? Just wondering if passing of 18 months has made a difference to the thickness? Thanks x

it hasn't really changed. Hairdresser has recommended keeping it short to help it get stronger. But it's still very fine, can see her scalp in some areas when tied up. Plan to just keep it short for next few years and see what happens.
