hello

Anyone able to help with boy name ideas? we loved Rex but then our neighbour called their dog Rex and we wonder if that is strange and maybe it is a dogs name? we love otis but my 9 year old is an ottilie - is that too much? i love Otto but that definitely seems a bit much!
arlo we like - is it too trendy or "soppy"?

ANY other name ideas?

Arlo is the best out of them.

Leo, Theo, Flynn, Owen, Milo, Ezra, Asher, Toby, Isaac, Kit, Jonah

To me, Otto and Otis are too similar to Ottilie!

TakeOnFlea · 27/06/2024 10:26

You don't know that Rex is a dogs name?

Arlo is also awful and people can't say it properly.

Jk987 · 27/06/2024 10:28

I like Rex. Millions of human names are dog names too. It's not a problem.

I like Rex. It's a nice, strong name. Yes it's a dog name but not in the same way that Rover is.

Not keen on Arlo and Otis, but they're OK.

All three are quite dependent on the surname they are going with as well though.

EyeOop · 27/06/2024 10:39

Rex has strong dog vibes, and king vibes, but they aren’t bad things. It does seem like it should be short for something though.

I wouldn’t do Otis or Otto with Ottilie, no. They are basically the same name to my ears. Arlo is overused and will date.

Does it have to be one of those? The obvious alternatives are Max, Leo, Theo etc but these are extremely common.

If you like short, gentle boys names, that’s aren’t too popular, how about Cody, Owen, Jonah, Casper, Eden. Or single syllable - Ray, Drew, Zac, Rhys.

JenniferEckles · 27/06/2024 10:54

I know several teen boys and no girls named Arlo, but the baby Arlo's around here are all girls, which I've found interesting.

Anyway, too similar to Ottilie, as is Otto, definitely!

I like Rex as a boys' name. Rex Harrison was Reginald, but in USA & Australia it seems to be more common as a name in its own right. If you like the sound, how about Reg, or Reggie? They are the more common short forms of Reginald. On the other hand, I'm guessing your neighbours won't always be your neighbours and your son should outlive their dog by many years, so go with Rex.

In the same vein as those names, I think of:

Milo
Cosmo
Lazlo (love this)
Theo (and this)
Rollo
Gino
Nico
Aldo
Leo (love this too)

Max
Dexter
Maddox
Axel
Felix

Kai
Finn
Finlay
Orion

I think it is fine for your child to have the same name as a dog. It is a human name too. Max is similar, if you don't want the same. Otto and Otis are very similar to Ottilie.

LOL at the hampster. When DS1 was born, DH suggested a name. I had to remind him we already had a cat by that name. Grin

I agree, pothole is too similar to the two ‘O’ bots names.

Arlo has been super popular recently.

Rex is fine. I presume must people won’t know your neighbour’s dog.

Other names-

Peter
Blake
Milo
Jacob

Shame, as Pothole is a lovely name 🤣

Someone I know gave her baby the same name as her own mother's dog! So I wouldn't worry about the neighbour.

Frances0911 · 28/06/2024 07:48

I don't know of anyone who has a dog called Rex. Maybe a hundred years ago, a bit like Rover, but it's not really a popular dogs name these days.

You don't live near me then. I know several
