16 month old still not sleeping through

second child, we’ve had the odd night where she sleeps until 5:30am, goes down at 7pm. Wakes about 3/4am for a bottle, weaned her off milk aand she has water in it now. This will sometimes settle her, sometimes not. My question is, how long until your kids slept through? Is there anything I can do? My first slept through at 9 months!

My daughter was 2 before she slept through for the first time. She is nearly 4 and doesn't sleep through reliably. On a good week she sleeps through 2 nights until 7.30, 2 nights until 5, 2-3 nights with 1 wake up and the occasional night with lots of wake ups.

She still has severe reflux and when that is playing up she is like a newborn waking every 40 minutes and only sleeping when held. We find for her to sleep through absolutely all of her needs need to be met, her sleep is quite sensitive.

My 19 month old is still nursing day and night. It is normal. They are so little. I don't have any advice other than to say, it is normal for babies to wake at night for nourishment and comfort.

My son is almost 4 & only recently started sleeping through, still have the odd night he wakes but it's literally for like 2 minutes, he wakes @ 6 no matter what time he goes down unless it's very late when I might get till 7

Mine didn't start sleeping through consistently until she was about 7!

How many times are they waking OP?

my first started sleeping through from about 18 months but went backwards a few times and reliably slept through from 2.

DS is 17 months and usually sleeps through so is a much better sleeper.

its quite unusual for a 9 month old to sleep through so your first must have been a great sleeper!

My first son was 4.5 before he slept through. Second son is 3.5 and still waking... I feel you, OP, years of poor sleep have a huge effect on you

minipie · 25/06/2024 20:53

Hmm reliably? Age about 6 🤪

ohidoliketobe · 25/06/2024 20:57

Between 2-3 for my three DC. They were all very similar in that from around 9 months they'd sleep roughly 11/12 hours but would wake at least once for a drink. I gradually weaned them off milk feed and onto water in a sports bottle for in the night, and then worked on self soothing. Mainly via talking to them through their door - do you need your drink, it's on your bedside table. It's tough.

Can you leave them with a no spill cup of water so that they aren't waking you for a bottle if they are thirsty?

DallasCC · 26/06/2024 06:52

Sleep train before they get any older and therefore more stubborn

My girl is 2 years and 8 months and still wakes twice during the night. It is what it is. She will sleep through when she's ready.

i would count yourself lucky with your eldest. I found my eldest’s sleep nuturally got a bit deeper from 2 and a quarter and he slept through reliably. Youngest hasn’t been as good a sleeper as a baby but he’s nearly 2 and I’m experiencing the same - getting much better. He’s also just transferred to a bed as was climbing out of the cot and he sleeps much better.
