I'm worried Ds (2.4) Is 'behind',

He is very slow with his speech, he tends to cry when he wants something rather than telling me, although I know he understands and can say what he means.
I have a 1.4 year old DD, and they are very close, and I wonder if he may be acting up to be like her.

He is very good with books, he can recognise letters, knows animals and sounds etc, but I would expect to be having conversation with him by now.

He has always been more into activity than talking and engaging, he is a great swimmer, can catch balls etc , so is it just the case that he's more into physical things and his speech will catch up later?

I think it's not that uncommon that boys can be slower with their speechdevelopement....I know my 3 boys didn't talk that much until they hit 3, and suddenly it just all came togetehr.
He seems fine in every other way and I assume he does have some vocabulary...don't think you got anyhting to worry about, tbh.

Thanks 3andnomore. He has quite a good vocabulary, he just doesn't use it.

An example is today when he went into the fridge, got a bottle of milk and threw it at me. He then had a huge tantrum on the kitchen floor as I was pouring it into his cup. He'd had almost a pint of milk 20 minutes before this.

My ds is 2.2 and generally resorts to that high pitched whine before speaking. I tell him he'll only have what he wants if he asks... it's not sinking in yet! He's also a late bloomer with language, but a brilliant swimmer, climber etc. You're ds sounds like he's on track developmentally. I think the tantrums are just frustration at not being able to make themselves understood (or get their own way!)

well he recognises letters which is more than my airy flairy dd1 does and she is 2.4yrs. Ds had speech problems but was actually quite advanced in everything else.He is now 4.6yrs and speech is fantastic. Also have a 15mth old and her speech is better now than DS was at 2.4yrs

My DS was like 3andnomores DSs. Really came along a lot after he turned 3. Before that he was obviously 'behind' a lot of his peers with speech, but now we have chats, which I could never have imagined a year ago! (He is 3.7). Sometimes people don't understand him as well as I do, but he seems to be fine in nursery, so I think the teachers can understand him too. He started nursery around the same time the speech got better so may have been a coincidence, or maybe not?

Also, if he says the odd word that I don't understand I try not to show that I don't - it gets him v frustrated. I subtly try and guess what the word is but he can tell I don't really know and gets really annoyed! DH and I really feel for him when this happens, but I still see improvements all the time.

He is bilingual and when he started talking it became obvious that he was understanding both languages. Everyone had said it to me before, but it really is true that they are taking it all in, and will suddenly start talking with a large vocabulary.

My grandmother always turns to me when he is talking and says 'what's he saying'. I get really annoyed about this -tell her not to do that as I think it affects his confidence.
