My daughter is at a new school and we just had sport's day, I was surprised that they had 1st, 2nd and 3rd in event's for year 1, in the previous school it was all non competitive so just relays and no winners etc, what do other schools do?

All the schools my children attend / attended definitely had 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Or school used to. She got medals at her last one.
This year they didn't do it 😞
Honestly I wish they did because my child is good at this sort of stuff. She won't necessarily win but she's definitely got a chance.

In my kids primary, there was a mix of competitive and non competitive. At secondary, it’s competitive but the kids can choose whether to be involved or not.

My son's are ranked from year 1 and non ranked for preschool and reception. I think that's normal I don't think I would like non competitive, my son needs to learn he can't win every thing and sometimes there's someone faster than you or can balance better than you or can spell better than you

Mixture of team events and individual.

Except the year they did team challenges instead. Basically it was a cross between a stretcher race and an obstacle course. It was bizarre. None of the parents had any idea what was going on.

I think a carousel of activities where parents follow their child around is the best thing because they aren’t bored to death rolling around in the grass for an hour waiting for their race.

As you have discovered some are competitive some are not. My kids school was competitive for your standard athletic events,.with 1st, 2nd and 3rd and a little podium for the medal presentation. But non competitive for various other fun things.

Not sure what they do before year 4 but years 4-8 upwards do traditional athletics events .Everyone chooses 3 events they want to do. Places 1-3 awarded certificates and everyone in the track finals ( so 8 competitors) get points for the house competition. Heats are timed so you could win your heat but not be in the final. Therefore not obvious till finals who did best in heats. If you just choose field it’s also easy to pick events where placing isn’t obvious until the end.
