Clothing allowance for teenagers

Until now, we've obviously bought DS' clothes for him to a large extent. He's 13. For the last year or two if he wants significant extras he's had to use birthday/christmas money. So, for example, we'll be buying basic trackies/jeans, t-shirts, a couple of hoodies, winter coat. Obviously all underwear etc. But he bought himself the ridiculously overpriced Hoodrich hoodie he wanted with money he got for Christmas.

Traditionally, he's been the kid who rotates 3 pairs of trackies and 3 t-shirts. Sometimes we splash out on Nike stuff but usually fo rbirthday/christmas. He's in year 8. now and is upping his game so we have bought a few extra bits for him but mostly cheap and cheerful - trousers, jeans, t-shirts, a nice shirt, a light jacket etc.

So I'm trying to work out how much clothing I should expect him to have. And whether I should consider swapping to a clothing allowance or if he' stoo young? And if I do swap, what do I give him?

What do you all do with your 13 year olds?

I think I'm feeling a bit sad as he's currently clothes shopping and hasn't even asked me. On the one hand, I'm pleased he doesn't expect me to fork out every five minutes, on the other hand, I don't want him to feel we're not providing.

DD is 13 and I give her the child benefit (£100pm). I'll buy her basics and she buys the extras. The money also goes towards outings with friends and anything else she wants.

I’ve been wondering about this recently too - my son is 14. He is quite alternative and most of his wardrobe is from charity/vintage shops. The prices can vary from a few pounds in charity shops to quite a lot in vintage shops. He probably has more clothes than he actually needs but he enjoys thrifting for them! I tend to buy the basic things like underwear/pjs etc and then go halves with him on the more expensive bits.
