No, but we are starting to consider it.

Yesterday, after the surprise snowfall during the night, DD woke us at 6am or so to ask if she could "get dressed". This question in itself should have raised a between the two of us, but didnt.

Turns out, she got dressed, put her shoes and coat on (she's nearly 5 yrs), then put a a coat and shoes on DS (nearly 3 yrs) who was still in his pyjamas.

They BOTH went out the front door, leaving it open !!! to play "snowballs". They came in some time later when they were very cold and wet.

Top bolt on front door has been used since.

I should add that it was to play in the street outside - not in the garden, and, whilst we are in a cul-de-sac, we are right next to a main London arterial dual carriageway!

FrannyandZooey · 07/04/2008 16:28

yikes
I think it sounds a wise move

no

in fact the top of the stable door (side) is usually open at all times

in fact the girls and I went for a picnic last week for about an hour and a half and left the back door wide open

MamaG · 07/04/2008 16:29

I do, habit from living in dodgy less nice areas!

yes, or mine would be off like a shot.

Amani · 07/04/2008 16:30

of course - why wouldn't you?

claricebeansmum · 07/04/2008 16:30

No but we do lock the front door at night. Which is good unless I have left my housekeys in the front door outside

Sometimes we lock our car too but sometimes we don't and leave the boot open

Chopchopmissy · 07/04/2008 16:30

Front door locked with chain on - have a budding houdini who can unlock it!

FrannyandZooey · 07/04/2008 16:30

Kerry I thought it would be one way to find out if it was just me that was not used to this as standard!

I had some childless friends round once. the girls asked me if they could go outside in the garden to play, I said 'yes of course'

the husband looked at me with horror and said 'do you let them play outside unsuprevised?! I just couldnt do that.'

dh and I thought we were going mad

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/04/2008 16:31

Only when I am minding.

Quiet country village where nothing much happens

JRocks · 07/04/2008 16:31

No, in fact it's left unlocked most of the time Although we lock it at night..

getmeouttahere · 07/04/2008 16:31

Yes. I explained why on the adventure playround thread. I'd like to keep my car and not be threatened for the keys with an axe !!!

TheHonEnid · 07/04/2008 16:31

sorry wrong thread

altohugh kind of relevant

FrannyandZooey · 07/04/2008 16:31

Amani I can't think of any reason why I personally would need to

so i never have
but obviously it depends on your situation

TheHonEnid · 07/04/2008 16:32

SparklyGothKat · 07/04/2008 16:32

doggiesayswoof · 07/04/2008 16:33

Yes. Dd (3.8) can open the door - and will. I have to lock it and take out the key, because if the key is in the lock she will quite happily turn it.

I am even more vigilant about this now, because a couple of weeks ago she unlocked the door and went out by herself to put out a "bug" which she found in her room. (This is what we do with insects/spiders etc which end up in the house rather than kill them!)

The bug was really a bit of fluff.

misdee · 07/04/2008 16:33

top bolt onmy front door is generally used during the day. its like a very secure safety chain, you can open the door 2inches with it on.
