I had just heard that in relation to quite a specific crime that was going on in Germany a year or so back I think. Burglars were breaking in specifically to steal the carkeys to expensive cars, and when they could not find the keys by the door, they'd head upstairs, often intimidating, or hurting, the owners. (I know, sorry, horrible!).
So, the advice to owners of nice cars was- leave the keys downstairs. Thankfully we have a very crappy car, so no worries there then.
And I can see why noone would wander into a house uninvited just for a handbag or mobile phone- that's what mauggers are for(!)

Front door is locked because DS1 has a habit of opening the door when I am sat on the loo and the whole world can see me having a wee..
back door is unlocked so that I can hang the washing out in the morning and gets locked when I go to bed at night.

Yes,

ds1 2.5 has been known to go outside by himself to "look for dada". He also opens to door for absolutely anyone.

Yes, always, because (a) we live in Leeds city centre and (b) dd (nearly 2) can unlock and open the doors if the keys aren't hooked up too high for her to reach.

We didn't close / lock the doors when we lived down a muddy track in a sleepy Welsh hamlet though.
