Interesting Franny. I definitley feel more comfortable with the doors locked and keys up on a high hook - maybe I do have slight agoraphobic tendencies...

expatinscotland · 07/04/2008 16:53

out here, no.

in Edinburgh, our door latched automatically and the handle was pretty high.

in the US, always. i either had auto locking doors or the first thing i did after getting in the door was turn the key in the lock.

Our back door isn't generally locked. Front one is, but we only use the back one to get in and out of.

It gets locked at night.

hippipotami · 07/04/2008 17:02

I am slightly claustrophobic also, and the thought of being locked in scares me.
But, if I lived in an area which was not-quite-so-safe, or in which crime was rife, of course I would lock the doors.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 07/04/2008 17:03

Yes - young children, busy road.

If no I wouldn't say so here though!

littlerach · 07/04/2008 17:11

Front door lokcked as dd2 is Not To be Trusted.

Back door, nope.

And dh has gone out leaving the front door wide open on mor ethasn one occasion.

Onlyaphase · 07/04/2008 17:20

I lock the front door when I'm in if I remember as DD is just figuring out how door handles work.

Horrifyingly we were away this last weekend and got back after 48 hours + away to find the front door swinging open. Given we have been burgled before when living in London we just thought we had been done again - but it seems not. We had just not shut the door properly on Friday morning. I blame DH and he blames me.

MuffinMclay · 07/04/2008 17:24

Front yes to stop ds escaping.

Back ones no. Often forget even when I go out.

mrsflowerpot · 07/04/2008 17:28

Front yes as dd (2.5) can open it.

Back door is usually open in the day, as the kids go in and out.

DH is way more paranoid about this than me.

We had back patio doors in our old house that were unlocked (unknown to us) from Bonfire night when we used them to go out and do fireworks to the following Easter when I went to open them up for the first time that spring.

TheBlonde · 07/04/2008 17:44

yes, occasionally I just have the chain on the front door but if I go upstairs I will lock it

been burgled in the past and there are a lot of dodgy folk round here

SheHadTwoMouthsForEyes · 07/04/2008 17:48

What about a Yale Lock? I feel very secure with mine.

DJCod · 07/04/2008 17:48

no cos that is what freaks do

hercules1 · 07/04/2008 17:50

No. Just yale lock. Dont lock at night either. We have big dogs though.

ComeOVeneer · 07/04/2008 17:55

Yes all doors are locked and keys are on a high hook. We live in a lovely safe area where you could actually leave your doors wide open all day (private road and a no through road). However, ds (now 3) has in the past let himself out of the house and been found wandering down the road in the dark (actually it was only 4pm) half clothed by a neighbour (who happens to be a policeman ) so since then we lock them until such a time as he can be trusted!

pooka · 07/04/2008 17:57

No. The door has a latch (think it's yale). So can only be opened from outside with a key. From inside, could be opened by dd if she really wanted to, but she doesn't.
Back door has just a door handle, and that's unlocked while we're in. But the side gate is (usually) locked so no way to get out the front.

pooka · 07/04/2008 17:58

We lock the back door at night (with key which is kept in lock ). The front door has the yale but we never use the mortice lock unless we go away. But even then, am not actually sure where the key is.

pooka · 07/04/2008 18:00

Oh and have just remembered that when we last came back from summer hol in france, the front sash windows were still wide open and the TV was on. Had been like that for a week.

KristinaM · 07/04/2008 18:02

no, we dont usually lock it at night either

only thevin varmints here are sheep & cattle

I leave the key in the ignition of the car too hoping soemone will steal it but the cows apparently can't drive. yet

TheBlonde · 07/04/2008 18:07

Just our yale lock was on when we were burgled

amytheearwaxbanisher · 07/04/2008 18:09

oh yes and the alarm on all day too in case ds tries to make a break for it out the windows when i pop to the loo fretful moi?

QOD · 07/04/2008 18:14

I live in a very nice country village, and we get the odd spate of crime! People trying doors and "selling" stuff, I lock and tell dh to lock.
Also, dd has a friend whose little sister thinks its ok to just bloody walk in!!! drives me nuts LOL

Nbg · 07/04/2008 18:20

I always always keep our doors locked.

In our house we maily use the back door to get in which leads you into the kitchen.
Its all open plan so we have the kitchen, dining room and family room including the stairs.
We then have a hallway and a front room which is quite cut off from the rest of the house.

So if the kids were in bed and we were sat in the front room, anyone could walk into the house and we wouldnt know.

I've also had 2 men/boys try my doors one night.
It was very frightning.

Plus my auntie has had someone walk into her house and steal her handbag while she was sat in her lounge.

LittleBella · 07/04/2008 18:22

Yes.

It just locks automatically when you close it, don't most front doors?

I just feel more secure knowing that if someone wants to come into my house, they have to knock first.

TeenyTinyTorya · 07/04/2008 18:30

In my area - definitely!
