Skinny 4yo?

Any advice for helping my 4yo gain weight? Any particular foods that might help?

She takes after her dad so it’s not a fussy/refusal to eat more thing, it’s purely the fact she and her dad are extremely slim and I look at her and feel like she’s so thin other parents may be judging me and it’s giving me so much anxiety. She’s about to go up to big school so I think the anxiety of people thinking I don’t feed her is getting worse as the time approaches 😂

Shes not a fussy eater and will eat pretty much everything except for dips (ketchup/mayo ect) and onions 😂

Typically foods we tend to eat regularly ate:
Salmon & rice with green veg.
Curry (prawn or chicken) with rice, naans and poppadoms.
Pork, veg with potatoes
Lasagna
Chilli and rice
Faggots, peas and mash.
Occasional super-beige freezer food when I cba to cook. I.e chicken nuggets, chips, pizza ect.
Snacks are carrots, cereal bars, malt loaf with butter, cheese and crackers, fruit.

Her two favourite meals are salmon and curry (and a roast dinner on Sunday😂) so I tend to do them a lot but maybe we need more protein?

She eats decent portions so I just don’t know if it’s anything we can help or whether it’s just the way she is. But any advice is appreciated!

Is she actually under weight? What centile was she born on and what is she on now?

DelilahBucket · 09/06/2024 18:54

Why does she need to put on weight? Has she dropped percentile since birth? DS has always been very slim, it's his genetics. He's still like a bean pole now at 16. He isn't unhealthy though, that's just his build.

As long as she is healthy, eats a good diet (sounds like she does) has plenty of energy and doesn’t get constant illnesses, she sounds ok! She might just be a string bean! I was too aged about 5-7 and filled out later on.

Don't try and feed her up just because you think other parents might judge. It's none of their business! If you think she's ok as she is then don't change things purely for fear of judgment.

It sounds like she has a healthy diet. As long as you aren't restricting foods, I think all this sounds fine and I wouldn't worry about trying to feed her up. She is still very young and her body will continue to change, but it sounds like this could just be how she's built, which is fine too.

Beepbeepvroomvroom · 11/06/2024 07:44

Sounds like she is perfectly fine as she is!

Ilikeblueberries07 · 11/06/2024 07:51

I feel like this was me as a child 😂
great healthy appetite but very skinny. My parents were the same when younger I think it's just genetics! I wouldn't worry too much.
i filled out in the end 😂 normal size 10/12 now.
sounds like she's eating a varied healthy diet so I wouldn't worry.

Cucumbering · 11/06/2024 07:55

Please don’t pressure her to over eat, she’s clearly naturally slim and just like her dad. Please don’t let your worry about weight transfer on to her and create eating issues. She sounds like my son, slim from birth and healthy, nimble

Normal weights are up to 2 percentile differences between height and weight.
So for a child that is on the 50th percentile for height a normal weight is between the 9th and 91st percentiles

Have they had their ready for school assessment? My daughter was weighed and measured there. My daughter is the opposite 1-2nd percentile for height and 25-35th for weight. Her paediatrician and HV aren't worried about her height as her weight is within 2 percentiles of it.

Ah thanks everyone. I did the NHS calculation and that’s out my mind well at ease as it says she’s a perfectly heathy weight.

She born just below the 2nd centile due to complications so perhaps she’s just still playing catch up. - I’ll never forget seeing her skin pretty much sag off of her arms and legs as a baby where she had no fat on her. Maybe it’s just still some leftover anxiety from trying to fatten her up as a baby 😂
