My 4.5 year old constantly has nightmares and has done since around 3 years old. At first I thought it was due to a lot of changes in her life (moving into a bed, new sibling, starting nursery, coming out of night nappies etc) but she still has them most nights.
They mainly consist of ghosts and the like, just usual kids stuff. I do let her watch TV but I monitor what she watches and pay close attention to if that's feeding into her bad dreams but literally she will have a bad dream about something she saw say on shaun the sheep or hey dugee. She is a very sensitive child but I don't think she has any ASN or anything like that. I, myself and actually my brother too have very lucid and crazy dreams and always have so wondering if it's genetic? I try to explain to her that dreams aren't real, that she is safe and then if it's the middle of the night say to her things like "it was just a dream, it's not real, you are safe, you are loved, you are cosy in your bed, you have your cuddly toy, your night light is on, mum and dad are just next door etc" to ground her back to reality again. I guess my question is am I doing something wrong? Why is she having so many bad dreams and is it normal for her age?
