Bedding for Moses Basket

Hi there,

I haven't had my little guy yet (due in 2 weeks) but I am getting confused about Moses basket bedding!!

I have got Moses Basket size cotton cellular blankets, but they still seem really big for the basket (which is normal size) If I fold them in to four they seem to fit but they that counts as four layers doesn't it?!

I presume that baby still needs to be in 'Feet to Foot' position, so how do you work out the blankets sheets, do you need to tuck them into the matress?

Please help I am very confused!

What about baby sleeping bags, can a newborn use them in a moses basket?!

I bought the Moses-sized cellular blankets, doubled them over and and tucked them around my baby and slightly underneath the mattress, so that they were snug but not tight over him (in 'feet to foot' position'). Try it out and see how it goes. I had a winter baby and found that we needed an extra blanket. Don't get too caught out in doing things exactly the way you're 'supposed to'. Very quickly you will learn to tell when your baby is too warm or cold without relying on blankets, room temps etc as an exact science.

yes, a folded blanket counts as two (or four, eight, and so on). i remember blankets trailing outside our moses basket for the dsses so i guess ours were too big too

you're right about feet-to-foot, but you'll find that a teeny baby won't really move around a moses basket - he'll pretty much stay put

i tucked in under the mattress a little bit, but the mattresses are so thin it can make the sides a little bulky, iykwim

i actually hate moses baskets with a passion now - ds2 was big and outgrew it very quickly. we ended up sending ours back to mamas and papas actually as it was so un-sturdy (bowed and bent, and wouldn't sit square on the legs) - got a refund and bought a cot (we already had a cotbed so used the cot in our room for the first 6 months)

unless you don't have the space for a cot i'd really recommend skipping the moses baskets completely tbh - take it all back and get a refund!

and yes, btw, you can get newborn sized sleeping bags

or you may find that your baby prefers to be swaddled anyway - ds2 did (hence no need for other sheets/blankets)

Hi! Thanks for the tips!! I would love to have a cot but at the moment I am in a one bed flat and just don't have the room, so I thought a Moses Basket would be ideal, until I've moved into a bigger place! Well we'll see how I get on with it!

DD (12 weeks) has just grown out of her Moses basket and, after about a week of faffing at the beginning, I bought sleeping bags and they are a godsend. I think most of them have a minimum weight - dd was over that from the start so I didn't have to look for newborn ones.

I highly recommend them - she can't kick them off and she's cosier and, hence, less of a problem putting her back down after night feeds etc.

If I had know that it would only last two months or so, I wouldn't have bothered with the Moses basket either. Her cotbed is massive and can't be moved out of her room, or fit in our room so we bought a travel cot with a bassinet, added a decent mattress and she's sleeping in that until 6 months.

Look for the 0-6 month ones with extra poppers under the arms for newborns (stops em slipping down inside). ds2 is 5 months now and still in his first set of grobags (we had 2 of each size, one on, one in the wash)
