Child constantly sick since starting Nursery?

Okay, so I don’t know if I’m just taking this as a coincidence or what but my kids (Daughter 4, son almost 2) started a new nursery in January after being away from any childcare settings since July 2023 because daughter had an op in September 2023 leaving her immobile for 12 weeks. All I seem to be dealing with every week is an illness!

Anyway, sicknesses started creeping in about 6 or so weeks after they started and they haven’t stopped! From coughs and colds (which I am fine with as that’s expected!) to now over 6 weeks of both kids having on and off vomiting and diarrhoea and fevers and stomach aches? I brought it up with the school and they just kind of gave me the “not much we can do about it” look.

My kids were off from last Friday until yesterday and both absolutely fine until now today my daughter has had a stomach ache all day apparently and now she’s got a temperature and falling asleep on the sofa and complaining her stomach hurts.

Is it time I look for alternative childcare or am I just blaming the nursery for no reason?

Helppppp! :(

I’d like to add after I mentioned it to the school a couple weeks ago that they posted on the parent app about there being recent bouts of diarrhoea and sicknesses and to keep kids off if they are not 100% well. So clearly it’s not just my kids!

This is nursery life. I had to give up in the end because a consultant vetoed it for one of our children (asthma).

There is an awful bug going round preschools and nurseries at the moment.

We have the same and I’m sick of it. Every week without fail a new illness. I know sickness comes with young kids but we cannot catch a break at all it’s so frustrating!!!!!

Cantgetausername87 · 29/05/2024 18:38

Yeah it's just nursery life and they're all the same I'm afraid! I guess the only consolation is it builds their immune systems. But yes you pay the fees but have to be constantly off work / rearranging childcare/ looking after poorly kids x

We are going through this at the moment. 14m DS started nursery nearly 3 months ago and has had tonsillitis 4 times in the first 8 weeks, and a viral flu the last 2 weeks. Absolutely relentless, he’s off more than he’s there. I’ve been told to expect this at least his first 6 months

johnd2 · 29/05/2024 21:40

Yes yes yes, it has honestly been relentless since September when one child is full time nursery+preschool and the other is in a large childminder.
Until about march it was just back to back, and now you get alternate weeks of each of us being ill, so things are looking up I suppose.
Let me know when it finishes please!

swashbucklecheer · 29/05/2024 21:44

It's par for the course I'm afraid. It's all building up their immune system. If it's any consolation- they are over the worst of it by the time they start school!

motleymop · 29/05/2024 21:57

That does sound pretty awful. Mine were ill a fair few times and it was pretty stressy, but what your describing sounds far worse.

motleymop · 30/05/2024 20:36

And, just to prove me wrong, one of mine has come home from nursery with a temperature....

Lou16777 · 30/05/2024 20:53

My 2 year old started in January and she's had a cold more than she hasn't since! Chicken pox is currently doing the rounds there too now...

nocoolnamesleft · 30/05/2024 20:55

All nurseries are biological warfare factories. Sounds absolutely normal for starting in nursery.

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 30/05/2024 21:34

Yes same here. 4 year old and 6 month old DDs. It's been relentless since November. Cough after cough for the 4 year old, plus conjunctivitis twice and a sickness bug. Sometimes the baby gets it's sometimes she doesn't.

DH and I have been ill more in the last 6 months than in the previous 5 years.

She was a lockdown baby (right at the start) so I think she missed out on germs that first year plus she was looked after by grandparents only until 2.5. I'm assuming she is just catching up on what she didn't get those years.

It's so exhausting though. I have tried vitamins, washing her hands as soon as she gets home etc. Nothing really helps. Lots of her friends parents have said the same. I'm hoping next winter will be better x
