I am so far behind!!!

I have given out surveys & got some filled in online. I have got them all back, now I just need to do something with the results... not sure what though as I'm crap @ maths & my dh will have to help me with that.

I also have a chapter on Introduction & a chapter on methodology... I have sort of combined both of these together & am not sure how to sort them out...

I don't have any of my literature reviews done yet/ no chapter analysis.... oh dear god I am in so deep right now...!!!

Also have a piece of coursework due in on Thursday & I haven't even the final draft of it done yet!!

Why me? I just feel like pulling the plug on the whole lot right now!

HI Wall of silence

Try not to panic too much..you have done quite a bit and it seems that some of the major things is reorganising what you have done. How important is it to get the coursework done...would submitting it with minimal work be a good idea so that you can clear your mind for the dissertation? I remember years ago when I was in my final year I stopped working on my dissertation to concentrate on my exams as I figured that I had got about as many marks for it as I was going to and I was better focusing on my exams....all my mates did the opposite, they got 2:2's and I got a 2:1.

As to the disseration, I would grab any help with the data cruching. Do you have to do a a lit review? If so get going on downloading good papers find some common themes and attack the downloads with a set of highlighter pens, different colour for each theme. Then when you write it up its much easier. If you find a good paper use their references to guide you to more good papers.

As you do the findings start to think about which results findings are most interesting/significant and put the discussion of this in the analysis.

Introduction is why its a good idea to look at this and what are the key issues. Methodology is what you did and why you did it that way eg survey as opposed to interviews etc.

Make a plan with different parts in different days, plan in rest and grab any childcare possible. It can be done. I had to do the first three chapters of my doctorate a month earlier as tutor needed it...I managed it and got great feedback from my tutor.

best wishes

Thanks SLM.

The thing is, I am tied really to week nights & weekends for my dissertation.

I have uni 2 days a week (full days) and the other three I am holding down a job.

In one way I am really pleased as I have managed to land myself a job in the field I want to work in, I went looking for work experience & the editor asked me to apply for a job that was available. I got it & started part time right away.

I guess I am just panicking now, as dh will be working nights for the next fortnight which means I will have the bedtime routines to do myself & everything to sort out after a long hard days work.

I just have to knuckle down & do as you suggest with the lit reviews.

My topic is: "Through what medium does the modern woman get her news and has the production of online news made it easier for her to stay in touch with current affairs"

HI WOS

Just popping out for a meal so short reply...yes you will get it done. I would concentrate each night on a different element rather than work on one till its right. If it all goes belly up then you will get more marks for all the elements rather than one good bit and the rest poor or not there. Your title sounds really interesting and you are selecting key words well, These will help with searching papers..Tip always read the abstract as you can get a good idea from that if its worth reading the rest. If not bin it. Eek door bell with babysitter. Will drop in tomorrow hopefully

WallOfSilence · 05/04/2008 17:07

Oh god Peachy, you are much braver than me!

Will you not get an extension due to baby? We can ask for one, but seeing as it's just a 3 days extension I don't see the point..

Have been looking on nexis lexis all day but can't get what I want in the papers I want

Thanks SLM

Nah, babies dont seem to warrant extensions at our Uni, they are HARD people

It's an interesting subject so Inknow once I get themindset it'll be fine, just a alck of focus at the moment.

What's your subject? we don't have to do research and lit reviews which helps

WallOfSilence · 05/04/2008 17:31

Mine is the seedy world of journalism.

I have to analyse my results... but I'm buggered if I know how to do that!

Peachy · 05/04/2008 17:37

Mine is in religions, so mroe theory and stuff (although dis. is in christianity and Slavery- so a bit mroe real iyswim).

I did psychology in year one and my statistics book ahsn't been used since if you want it (lots of the sort of thing you need) just CAT me your addy and I shall pop in post for you.

WallOfSilence · 05/04/2008 18:29

That's a really lovely offer, but it would be far too much trouble for you to go to when ready to pop out a sprog!!

My dh has Alevel maths so I'm hoping to convince him to help me!!

I have found the proper way to use Lexis Nexis now (was easy really, I was just using it wrong) so am going to quit now for the day as I have to babysit dh's cousins baby... (if that makes sense)and he's a very clingy baby... he cries at dh & ds, therefore I am left with a snuggly baby on my knee & ds (3) throwing me daggers!!

WallOfSilence · 05/04/2008 18:30

I forgot the say thankyou for the offer!

And your dissertation sounds very very interesting! I bet once you get started you will have it done in no time, quite often (If you're anything like me) it's the thought of getting started that is worse than actually doing it!!

Hi Peachy and WOS

Keep going!!! Well done on sussing out Lexis Nexis WOS.

Good point Peachy about always saving every thing on a memory stick. We had a recent power surge in the road and I was OK but several lost their computers. We do have some good stuff to protect it but with 34K words I am NOT going to risk it

I need to buy a memory stick tomorrow!! I need to remember to do that!!!

I have been out all day today. Have uni tomorrow & then work tomorrow night for a couple of hours. So it will most likely be Tuesday night before I get back to it.

But I am going to see my tutor tomorrow to share my panic....

ss I might end up doing just that!! And am [anvy] @ you for finishing yours!!
