How much does your toddler sleep in 24hrs?

My just turned 2yo has always been on the lower end of sleep needs but what he sleeps in comparison to other 2yos I know seems so low!

5.30-6am wake up
1-2pm: nap
7.45/8pm: bedtime, asleep by 8.15/8.30pm. Messes around for 30 mins normally 🙈

He sleeps through but only getting around 9.5hrs overnight most nights, sometimes just 9 and I cap his nap at an hour as bedtime battles were worse when he slept longer.

He seems happy in the day so I don’t think he’s overtired.

What do your 2 year olds sleep? Any other low sleep needs kids?

DS had 11 hours at just turned two after dropping his nap. I think that was lower end of the normal range.

Mine is not a toddler now (he’s 6) but he never slept more than 11 hours in a 24 hour period. Most toddlers I knew at the time were doing 12 hour stretches at night, plus naps. However, my son slept right through the night from 10 weeks old; he barely even woke up while teething. So I had a very early riser (5am) but a very sound sleeper.

My LB has never slept much. He gets about 10hrs most nights (maybe 11hrs occasionally) and doesn’t nap (nearly 3)

My 2.4 year old will usually sleep at least 10 hours at night and then a 2 hour nap.

northernmamax · 26/05/2024 06:35

My little girl was the same found but when she dropped her nap she was sleeping longer at night obviously.

Every child is different though I wish she would still nap! Since she dropped her nap she goes to sleep at about 6.30/7 and sleeps till about 7.30 now some days 8 x

lipglossandmascara · 26/05/2024 06:36

1.5 hours during day

12 hours at night

Forgot to say age - 21 months

Soggyhatsandwich · 26/05/2024 06:41

About 12 hours a day. Maybe drop the nap altogether?

My toddler is 2 and a half and doesn't nap unless he's had a very active day, is run down with illness, or we're driving somewhere when he has a bit of a sleep in the car.

He sleeps 6pm-6/7am depending on naps/level of activity the day before. It's easy to tell which days he needs a bit of a sleep but I try to do it in the car while we're going somewhere as he can sleep for hours in his bed.

My DD who is 2 naturally sleeps max 10h a night, sometimes only 8-9h. Her nap is usually 1.5-2h. I am ok with this as it seems to be her natural rhythm.

Nollie85 · 26/05/2024 06:53

Just turned 2 year old - 11 hours overnight no nap

mrssunshinexxx · 26/05/2024 07:39

Sleeps roughly 7-6/6.30 no naps 2.5 hasn't napped for 6 months

LGBirmingham · 26/05/2024 08:26

When mine was in the transition to needing no nap but was still getting 30 mins some days (thanks nursery) he would often only sleep 9 hours at night. But after his 3 nursery days the next day with no nap he would sleep 13 hours +. Then would average out over the weekend to 11-12. I think you need to throw some no nap days in there if you can.

He was actually shattered after the days with naps because he just got so much less sleep overall. Unfortunately we had a tricky room manager who was very resistant to stopping naps for any children. So we suffered this pattern from 2.5-3 until he moved room.

FrizzledFrazzle · 26/05/2024 08:36

Sleeps from about 9pm - 5.30am with a 1 hour nap.

I'd love to drop the nap totally but it's hard - he seems to shorten his night sleep rather than the nap.

S0livagant · 26/05/2024 08:37

We had a problem with naps at the childminder. They had to lie down on cot mattresses in a dark room so he did nap there, then up until 9pm or later that night.

ClonedSquare · 26/05/2024 08:39

Ours is 2.5 and he sleeps around 11-12 hours a day.

If he doesn't have a nap, he's usually in bed by 7:30 and definitely asleep by 8. He then wakes up around 7:30am

If he does have a nap (1-1.5 hours), he's in bed a little later and gets up a bit earlier. So night sleep is usually more like 8:30-6:30

InTheRainOnATrain · 26/05/2024 08:42

At that age DS did 11 hours at night and a 1 hour nap. By 3 he had dropped the nap but night sleep remained the same. His sister though slept 12 hours at night and napped for 2 hours, and kept that up until almost 4! They’re all different and if he’s a happy boy with no signs of tiredness he’s obviously getting what he needs. Tough going for you though!!

Gettoachiro · 26/05/2024 08:45

My little girl is usually in bed by 7.50 and up at 7.15 most mornings, she has the occasional half an hour nap during the day if she's tired though too.

SkyBlue1987 · 26/05/2024 08:48

My 4 year old needs 11.5 or 12 hours or he is a cranky mess. Although oddly he seemed to function on less sleep when he was around 2 or 3 and would fight sleep. I don’t know if his sleep needs have changed or if he was just chronically overtired at that age.
