Kids and dressing themselves!

What age do kids remember they need to take a layer of clothing on/off when they are hot/cold? My 4.5 year old will never take his jumper off unless I tell him (he’s clearly warm and overheating with rosy cheeks). Same with being cold, he’ll play outside in the freezing cold with hands like ice - but won’t realise he needs a jacket unless I offer one!. He’s at school in six months so I was hoping he might figure it out before then as I doubt the school teachers will be as good as the daycare teachers at monitoring appropriate clothing.

Reception teachers are very good at monitoring appropriate clothing! They do it constantly, and help children remove jumpers/put on coats to go out to play etc. (Then spend ages trying to return unlabelled clothing back to the correct child).
In my experience many 5/6 year olds seem to not sense if they are too hot or cold, or then know what to do about it.
