What time does your 2.5 year old go to bed??

And do they still nap? I’m having a nightmare with working all this out. If he doesn’t nap he’s exhausted by 4/5. If he does nap he won’t go to bed til 9/10. This has been going on for at least 3 months.

Mine dropped his nap just before age 2. Like yours, his bedtime was getting later and later before he dropped it. He did it himself, just stopped needing to nap seemingly overnight.

We do build quiet time into most days which helps- if we're home, after lunch, if we're out for the day at around 3/4pm. He then has tea at about 5, bed by half six most nights for 12 hours sleep.

Loveshine · 21/05/2024 20:58

We go up to bed about 8pm and she's usually asleep by 8.30pm and most nights will sleep through. She doesn't nap at nursery but will tend to do if she's at home although we are having more days recently where she'll resist it but then she's grumpy af by tea time so I try and make sure she's tired out by an activity like swimming or something physical to make her sleepy enough she'll go down for a bit.

No nap - asleep by 6pm. Was an adjustment at
first

DD goes to sleep around 9pm. She naps for an hour at around 1.30pm. She doesn't really have quiet time in the day, she's very active and day times are a whirl of sport and dance classes, play group, adventure playgrounds, swimming, and toddler classes. Wakes at 6.30am every day.

Jk987 · 21/05/2024 21:03

Would a shorter and/or earlier nap be worth trying? Then aim for an 8pm bed.

EdithGrantham · 21/05/2024 21:04

No nap and asleep by 8, often earlier. She does still try to nap mid-afternoon but we don't let her because even half an hour pushes bedtime back by 2 hours

climbershell · 21/05/2024 21:12

I feel you!!!! 2yr 5 months here. Usually naps 1-1.5hr, awake 2pm latest and still not asleep til 9/9.30pm. If she doesn't nap, she'll often fall asleep 4.30/5pm. Been this way for months.

Even on the 2 week days she's with me and now naps early in the car, 11.30-12.30, she won't sleep til 9pm. She wakes 6-7am.

Nightmare!!! And if we did no nap, 6pm bedtime isn't even possible as have a 13 month old and partner doesn't get home til 6.45/50. If she did 6pm she'd wake 5am anyway...

Today she woke 6.50, napped 11.30-12.40. Just laid down, legs all over the place, singing to herself. I'm laying next to her (she can't see I'm on my phone)

Mine stopped napping completely before turning 2 (around 21/22 months I think). We do bath at 6, bed at 7. Have done since DS was about 6m old and still do now at 3.5 😂 He’s always been an early riser so is up at 5/5.30am every morning.

@Roellis12 What time would your DS usually nap? We went through a phase where we had to manipulate sleep times so much to try and stay on some kind of schedule

WooshWithAWotsit · 21/05/2024 21:19

My 2.5 yr old DS goes to bed at 7.30pm and wakes up between 7.00-7.30 am.

He still has a nap of around 1-1.5 hours in the middle of the day. I know that many kids have dropped their middle of the day nap at this point, but DS goes from a nice little boy to a nightmare if he misses that nap, so we won't be dropping it until he shows evidence of not turning into a gremlin without it Grin.

Muffin101 · 21/05/2024 21:20

Mine is 2y6m exactly and doesn’t nap, hasn’t done since just before (maybe just after, I forget) his second birthday. We aim to be in jammies and sat ready for a couple of stories by 6:40, asleep between 7 and 7:15. Generally up for the day between 6:30 and 7ish, sometimes a little later.

ClonedSquare · 21/05/2024 21:38

Our son is in the phase where he doesn't need a nap if we're busy all day but if we're at home he gets bored and cranky when he's overtired.

If he has a nap, it's about an hour from 2-3 and then he starts the bedtime routine around 7:30 and is asleep around 8:30ish (he does about half an hour of tossing and turning to nod off)

On a no nap day, we start the bedtime routine nearer 7 and it's usually 8 when he falls asleep.

Simonjt · 21/05/2024 21:41

Our daughter is starting to sometimes skip her nap, in the evening she is asleep by about 7-7:15ish.

FlyingHorses · 21/05/2024 21:44

Mine dropped nap just before 2.5yrs because bedtime was getting too late. I moved bedtime forward to 6pm to keep little one well-rested for a month or two. I also avoided car journeys during nap danger zones! We’re now at 7pm bedtime and up at 6-6.30am. As long as DC gets 11hr+ he’s all good. It’s all so individual to your DC and what works for them!

SErunner · 21/05/2024 22:06

Nearly 3, still has a one hour nap most days and sleeps 7.30 - 6/6.30 ish. Manages pretty okay now with the odd day without a nap though. Could you try naps alternate days instead of all or nothing?

RockAndRollerskate · 21/05/2024 22:12

2.5yo here has never missed a nap in his life. Limited strictly to 1h and asleep by 7:30pm.

Anything longer than 1h we’re fighting until 8:30

Yourethebeerthief · 21/05/2024 22:14

2 and a half, no nap, out cold by 6pm, sleeps 6pm-7am.

Dinner is 3:30/4 o'clock followed by a bath some nights, quiet play/telly time on other nights. In jammies and doing bedtime stories by 5:30 because he's sound asleep in bed by 6.

I love it much more than having a nap during the day.

FrizzledFrazzle · 21/05/2024 22:37

I feel your pain. We did have a 1h 15 min nap, but DS was falling asleep at 9.30pm and waking up between 5:20 and 5:45am. Cut the nap to 45 min recently and it's more like 9:30-6:30. Nursery are not keen because he looks sleepy at the end of the day and when they wake him from his nap, but I need this extra night sleep!

climbershell · 22/05/2024 16:48

After a 1hr nap yesterday, waking up 12.45 and asleep at 21.30!! I got nursery to try no nap. Just had a phone call, she crashed out at 4.30pm. They tried to keep her awake (washed face with water)... so they're giving her half hr.

So, tomorrow they'll try half hour nap... but they lay them down for nap at 12.30 and wake 2. She often takes a good half hour or more to fall asleep. So I'm not too hopeful of a much better bed time.

JanisOHara1978 · 22/05/2024 17:18

with my James , he was two we started shortening his naps, the nursery was fine with it and it gave us a better lie in in the morning. you should try it it gives them less energy in the evenings and they leave me in peace without having to feed them more snacks after dinner. this gave me at least two hours in bed in the morning. it was the break me and john needed not getting up at 5AM constantly !!!!! this change up greatly helped me and johns relationship we were constantly fighting who's getting up to look after James to do his breakfast. it worked miracles for me and will do the same for you !

PeatandDieselfan · 22/05/2024 17:32

Mine napped from 1 til 2 at that age, then went to bed at 8.30. It worked OK for us. Also, I tried to make sure there was plenty of outdoor/physical action in the afternoon so they'd sleep better.

tiredmamawideawaketoddler · 22/05/2024 23:50

Mine is still awake now but he has always been a late riser and a night owl!! He usually wakes up between 9am-11am and usually goes to bed between 10pm-11pm sometimes earlier, sometimes later. Naps are usually late if he has them though.
