Anything out there that actually works to clear out a constipated week old baby? Hate seeing him in so much pain!
He’s also very hard to burp after a bottle. Tried infacol and gripe water but no help.
Thankyou!

He's only 1 week old?
How often is he having a poo? Is it soft when it comes? What milk is he having? How much is he taking?

He's pooing once a day if I'm lucky.
He was on cow and gate but today I've put him on cow and gate colic and constipation to try help. But nothing so far.
3oz every 2-3 hours

He must be on formula for that to be the case.

How is the poo when it comes? What makes you think he's constipated?

Onthebrink87 · 17/05/2024 15:40

It might be worth trying some of the ready made formula? I think it's something to do with how it's sterilised/pasteurised- no idea, but one of my sons became quite constipated after being prescribed gaviscon and it was the only thing that worked!

Bobbybobbins · 17/05/2024 15:42

If you are really concerned you should see a doctor

TryingForBaby2 · 17/05/2024 15:48

We've tried ready made bottles, they worked the other day but nothing since.

Can't see a dr until he's registered.

And I know he's constipated. He's not poo'd for days, is in absolute agony with his belly.

You need to call your community midwife and get them to refer you in for a review as that's not normal for a newborn. Given it's a Friday I'd be calling them right away. If you can't get through call the GP back as they won't leave a newborn just because you haven't registered him with them yet. Speak to the practice manager if you have issues with the receptionist.

DappledThings · 17/05/2024 15:54

Have you tried some massage, bicycling his legs gently etc?

I'm gunna try that now. Thankyou

Constipation doesn't relate to how often they poo - it describes hard dry stools. Once a day is fine if it's soft and yellow. Soft can be anything from putty to peanut butter or yoghurt consistency.
It's really hard when they are this tiny to know exactly what's what and diagnose them. Some really struggle with the transition to milk feeds and are just not used to the normal feelings of digestion and pooing so they cry bcos they can't say 'ooo that feels odd'. There may not be actually anything wrong. It's tough. I think poo texture is the best indicator that all is well.

MigGirl · 17/05/2024 15:58

Surely you are still under the midwife, as above ring them and get your baby seen ASAP. They shouldn't be constipated at a week old.

MigGirl · 17/05/2024 16:00

Yes actually that's also a good point constipation is dry hard stool. Not how often they are going, if the stool is soft and yellow then even if it's just once a day they aren't constipated.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/05/2024 16:12

In ye olden days we would have given sips of orange juice or prune juice. I don't know of thats allowed now though - although it works.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 17/05/2024 16:27

Nooooo very old fashioned advice

dementedpixie · 17/05/2024 16:59

If your week old baby hasn't pooed for days then they need to see a doctor. It is not normal for a newborn baby to go several days without passing a bowel movement. Please seek medical advice
