Baby wants to go to bed before 5pm!

My daughter is 2 1/2 months and really likes her sleep. We wake up anywhere between 5am and 6am. She is very active in the morning when we read and play together. She will nap for about 5 hours during the day split into 2 or 3 naps in the baby carrier. She was really sleepy at 4:30 today. She started to stir at 5:15 so I got her up but after 10 mins she couldn't keep her eyes open and was "grizzly crying". She has been asleep since. If I let her she would sleep through til 10 or 11pm for a feed and then straight back to sleep. It's like she thinks it's night time in the afternoon. She is a healthy weight, very alert and curious when she is awake. Should I be letting her go to sleep this early?

At that age I'd just be following her lead. If she's up for the day at 4am then cap the 5pm nap, but she may just need a lot of sleep today. It's trial and error and different for every baby, but I don't think mine had a routine at that age (and I remember finding that frustrating!).

Yeah as aboveat that age follow her lead. As long as she's eating, is alert when awake and a healthy weight I wouldn't be too concerned.

We started to try a routine at around 4 months but even then it was very loose. It naturally just fell into place to be honest.

Honestly just enjoy it!

Much too early to have a set bedtime.
Just let her sleep in a Moses basket next to you while you watch tv or something and then all go to bed after her feed at 10/11.

Enjoy the newborn stage 🙂

Don't worry about a routine until 6 months minimum! More likely 8-10 months. Just follow baby lead

Honestly 5.30pm bedtime isn’t totally unusual especially if you are starting your day between 5-6am. Think of it this way if you started the day between 7-8am with a bedtime of 7.30pm that would sound totally normal. My LO is 10 months now and he’s been to bed at that time quite often. Your DD is still very young too and is still differentiating day and night. If you do want to push bedtime a bit though could you try going for a little walk or even a sit in the garden around 5pm? , it’s lovely and light now and may reinforce that it’s still daytime even just to extend 30 mins or so before bed.

Thank you everyone for the advice. It sounds like I have been expecting too much of her. I think she might be going through a growth spurt though. The last couple of days she has just been sleeping and eating (and she definitely looks longer!)

It's incredible how much they can feed during a growth spurt isn't it! If she loves her sleep you're on to a winner anyway OP Smile
