When did you stop pre-wear washing baby clothes?

Just wondering the above really.

DD is 6 months. I have been washing all of her clothes before she wears them ever since she was born.

my mum has bought her a lovely outfit to wear tomorrow for my birthday lunch. I want to put her in it so as not to upset my mum and also think it’s lovely but I can’t get it washed and dried between now and then.

is 6 months an ok age to not faff around with pre-wear washes?

My next comment shares its because of eczema. Should’ve added that.
don’t want any adverse reactions when suffering enough with eczema. I have it and I know what it’s like

If you or your child has had an eczematous reaction from new clothes then it's a sensible thing to do. But that's going to be pretty rare and it's largely quite a paranoid thing to do.

You wouldn't wash a new spoon before eating with it?

Statistically you would be fine, as you most likely would be if you licked a carpet or ate someone else's toenail clippings, but this is quite unusual I think.

No, of course not, it's straight out of the packet.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 11/05/2024 17:54

About 3 months.

TheFluffiestCat · 11/05/2024 17:55

I only washed hand-me-downs that had been in binbags in the loft since my nieces outgrew them. Fresh from the shop? Straight on the baby

Natsku · 11/05/2024 17:59

I pre-wash all our clothes, children and adults, because I hate that factory smell and also the potential grimness from people trying them on (not an issue with baby clothes though!) but for a one-off I really wouldn't worry

MummyDummyNow · 11/05/2024 19:33

To the people who wash everything before wearing are you also the people that don't let anyone sit on the bed in outdoor clothes?

UnicornMamma · 11/05/2024 19:36

Honestly in a decade of parenting I have never done this.

It's another job on a long list that can go. It's just pointless.

bluecomputerscreen · 11/05/2024 19:45

never
dc are now teens

still prewash anything we wear apart from coats or 'emergency' clothing when travelling.
to be fair we have quite a bit eczema in the family.

Not that rare considering it happens.

catlady7 · 11/05/2024 21:49

Don't bother

Tooearlytothink · 12/05/2024 07:07

I'm 33 & still pre-wash new clothes before wearing. I just hate the idea of how many different people have handled the material/clothes along the production process & while in the shop. That said, in a situation like this I would just go without. I don't think there's any real risk, it's a personal preference.

Weloveflowerss · 12/05/2024 07:11

I still do it but that’s only cos I worry about pesticides on them, think I’m being a bit overkill though

DinnaeFashYersel · 12/05/2024 07:38

Never started it.

MillshakePickle · 12/05/2024 08:17

I pre wash everything for us and the kids. Clothes come off production lines and packaged by god knows who and their questionable hygiene. Plus I can't imagine, the work benches are sanitary and there would loads of cloth dust and debris flying everywhere. Also, clothes may be pre treated with starches and other chemical/ dyes.

It's just not something I would take the risk with

LyricalGangsta · 12/05/2024 09:00

Oops
I've never prewashed anything
4 kids, all still alive

bluecomputerscreen · 12/05/2024 09:07

clothes shipped from abroad are treated with pestocides and fungicides for shipping (or they would arrive with holes and mouldy after weeks in a shipping container)

plus fabrics are treated for easier sewing. handled by people in unsanitary conditions.
plus ship floors are filthy.

bluecomputerscreen · 12/05/2024 09:10

but for a one off, like the op situation I would probably not sweat it. especially if it will be worn over underwear.

Peonies12 · 12/05/2024 09:11

I never do it. No wonder kids have allergies all the time, everyone is so hygiene obsessed

Twinkletwinklelil · 11/05/2024 21:48

Not that rare considering it happens.

Eczema specifically related to the wearing of new clothes isn't common
