When did you stop pre-wear washing baby clothes?

Just wondering the above really.

DD is 6 months. I have been washing all of her clothes before she wears them ever since she was born.

my mum has bought her a lovely outfit to wear tomorrow for my birthday lunch. I want to put her in it so as not to upset my mum and also think it’s lovely but I can’t get it washed and dried between now and then.

is 6 months an ok age to not faff around with pre-wear washes?

Only underwear washed for 10 & 12yo. Everything for 6yo but she has terrible eczema and allergies so nothing gets put on unless it’s washed and re washed with plain water.

What’s going on her skin? If it’s something that can be worn over a bodysuit, tights or leggings I might be a bit relaxed.

I didn't know this was a thing either. Must be a Mumsnet thing 😂

Two kids and two adults in this family and nothing had ever happened to any of us due to not pre washing new clothes.

I never pre washed my dd clothes, never knew that was a thing

Depends on where you are - no reactions in the UK, but when we moved to Canada the whole family all reacted to new clothes unless we washed them first. Some kind of starch or preservative to keep them crease-free in the shops, apparently. We don’t use it in the Uk, so no need to pre-wash.

It’s like keeping eggs in the fridge - necessary in North America because of how they have been processed, not necessary over here.

I'm 40 and I always pre wash clothes. my choice was vindicated when I found used tissue paper in a dress I tried on from JL (online order). the population at large have a broad interpretation of hygiene and some may have infectious skin diseases or parasites eg. lice. better safe than sorry.

BananaLambo · 10/05/2024 22:53

I have never heard of this.

peopleonthebusgoupanddown · 10/05/2024 22:54

13 months and still doing it. I've started doing the same for my own new clothes since learning we were do it for babies.

The less toxic chemicals and factory dirt in my house, the better.

Mum is 85. Washes everything before wearing. 🤷‍♀️

Your mum is smart. Have a Google about what kind of chemicals are sprayed all over the clothes we buy before they are shipped. It's bad.

I've never done this. I didn't even know it was a thing some people do.

Me too! 3 healthy AC.

3luckystars · 10/05/2024 22:57

I never washed anything either.

TeddyBeans · 10/05/2024 22:58

I still wash my 6 year olds clothes before he wears them. All of DD1's clothes are as well. I had a pretty extreme hives reaction when I wore an outfit straight out of the packaging from an online order off a grocery store clothing website. Was so itchy that I'd never risk it happening to my kids!

Do you have a quick wash cycle? Can you spin it a million times to get all the possible water out of it? A dehumidifier works wonders at sucking the remaining water out of my clothes overnight

Insane, never heard anything so ridiculous.
Is your child in a sealed bubble when you go outside?
What is it you think you’re “protecting” them from?

Sheer madness.

mrsmacmc · 10/05/2024 22:59

Still prewash everything DD is 9mo as I do with DH and I's new clothes. Even still I've ended up with blue dyed nails from jeggings I had on today 🫠

I wash everything before it's worn (by anyone, adult or child) because it's gross not to. But I don't think it would be harmful to skip it once for a reason like this.

Why is it gross?
Do you wear a hazmat suit, mask and goggles outside the house?

Never did. Two healthy kids. They have an immune system.....

Same here

FuckTheClubUp · 10/05/2024 23:03

I’ve never stopped doing that and never will. Makes no sense how you’ll buy a piece of clothing and put it straight on your skin, especially for a 6 month old baby

Hiker50 · 10/05/2024 23:05

Oh no. Mine are 24, 19, 17 and 15. I’ve never done it! Am I meant to do it?

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 10/05/2024 23:05

Never washed new clothes. Wash everything I get second hand on vinted etc.

What’s madness is you buying clothes (either online or in person) and putting it on your body straight away. No care or concern about the fact that people have most likely tried it on before you, it’s been dropped in the stockroom, dropped on the warehouse floor and so many other things.

Don’t tell me, you also buy a pack of knickers and put them straight on without washing them first?🤦‍♀️

3luckystars · 10/05/2024 23:06

Yes.

Barleysugar86 · 10/05/2024 23:08

Never did, even for newborn. Never had an adverse reaction to anything. I assumed this was only really necessary if there is a history of skin irritation or eczema in the family. Two very healthy happy kids here.

Babaquestions · 10/05/2024 23:08

I always wash clothes before wearing them, whether they're my clothes or my baby's clothes. It's hygienic. I'm so surprised lots of people on here don't wash their new clothes!

I do indeed use knickers straight from the pack without washing first. Never had a problem from it. Worked in retail too.

It's really not the "regular" germs to be concerned about, it's the chemicals that are sprayed all over new clothing. Google "chemicals on new clothes." It's quite serious, actually, and I can't fathom how anyone would knowingly put new clothing on a baby/child if they knew about the chemical process clothing goes through before it's shipped.
