When did you stop pre-wear washing baby clothes?

Just wondering the above really.

DD is 6 months. I have been washing all of her clothes before she wears them ever since she was born.

my mum has bought her a lovely outfit to wear tomorrow for my birthday lunch. I want to put her in it so as not to upset my mum and also think it’s lovely but I can’t get it washed and dried between now and then.

is 6 months an ok age to not faff around with pre-wear washes?

I never wash anything new before wearing it and somehow I have survived. I also don't have cancer.

The level of fear over "germs", "chemicals", and people - gasp - having touched your clothes before you is astounding, worrying (are people really so terrified of life?) and a bit pathetic.

just as you would wash the cups and spoons before first use.
Nope, wouldn't do this either unless they looked particularly dusty.

You wouldn't wash a new spoon before eating with it?

Statistically you would be fine, as you most likely would be if you licked a carpet or ate someone else's toenail clippings, but this is quite unusual I think.

Is it? Just wouldn't cross my mind really.

Never started. Also never used non bio liquid either.

Would you wash a spoon you bought from a charity shop?

Nevermind, I misread

VillageLite · 11/05/2024 15:00

I never wash anything before using it. I didn’t realise it was a thing. I always use biological powder too. Everyone is fine.

If the chemicals were that dangerous, you’d be inhaling them in the shop anyway, so you wouldn’t avoid exposure, and surely they dissipate enough in the shop while things are hanging up (I don’t buy stuff online).

I couldn’t care less if something has been touched, tried on or dropped on the floor before I bought it , unless it has made it visibly dirty- I’ll do a visual check, if it looks clean we’re good to go. If it looks dirty, i won’t buy it in the first place.

Probably not. No more likely than a new one. Maybe a cursory rinse under the cold tap if it occurred to me. It just wouldn't really be on my radar to think "new to me = dirty".

We always wash clothes first for everyone in the family due to the chemicals used in manufacturing - they can cause an allergic or other sort of reaction. I thought everyone knew that and did the same. But clearly not. Each to their own.

Come on!

You thought everybody knew that and did the same.

You surely realise this is quite unusual and unnecessary? If the allergic reaction was as much of an issue as you think, you'd experience it every time you went into a clothes shop, or bought a new couch.

Fine to do if you want but hardly what everyone does.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/05/2024 15:12

Don’t tell me, you also buy a pack of knickers and put them straight on without washing them first?

Of course I do? Why on earth wouldn't I?

If they're in a pack, what's the issue?

I would usually buy sets, so hanging up in the shop, never wash those either.

People have the oddest ideas.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 11/05/2024 15:18

Never did, life is just too short. I don’t know anyone who died because they didn’t wash a T-shirt.

Fr7fr6 · 11/05/2024 15:27

I think you should wash everything before wearing for you and the baby. There are a lot of chemicals used in the dyeing and finishing process. I believe a lot are sprayed to prevent mould/mildew in transit and storage.

ThisZingyBlueFish · 11/05/2024 15:27

Like many others, I've never stopped washing before wear. I'm 50 and do it for all my own clothes and my teens and DH.
The only time ever that I didn't wash something new (jeans) I ended up at the doctor with itching and rash all over my legs. Took me longer than it should have to connect the dots and realise that was why, it was only when doctor asked about whether I'd switched to a different brand of washing powder that it clicked I hadn't washed them at all.

Hiker50 · 10/05/2024 23:05

Oh no. Mine are 24, 19, 17 and 15. I’ve never done it! Am I meant to do it?

No! You definitely aren’t! It’s nuts!

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 10/05/2024 23:08

I do indeed use knickers straight from the pack without washing first. Never had a problem from it. Worked in retail too.

Me too. Strangely still alive with no horrible fanny disease

CosmosQueen · 11/05/2024 15:29

The only time I did this was the new first size baby-grows before the DCs were born, never again!

VivaDixie · 10/05/2024 23:10

Erm, yes

My 51 year old fanjo has survived the apparent apocalypse 😂

This is definitely a MN thing as none of my (perfectly sane) peer group do this. I never have pre washed and never will. Despite the hysteria on here

Fanjo apocalypse has just about made my day

Katherina198819 · 10/05/2024 23:24

I'm 36 years old and wash very single thing before wearing it.

There are leftover residues from manufacture or treatments to the fabric, plus they often spray with chemicals to keep bugs, etc. away. (Ask people who work in retail- they will tell you to wash every single thing!!!)

I also find the "new clothes" smell very unpleasant.

Looks like some people also don't mind all the dirty hands that probably touched the clothes beforehand...

You’re right, I couldn’t give a shiny shit about manufacturers hands touching clothes.

BouleDeSuif · 11/05/2024 15:35

I've never washed cutlery before using it, or crockery, or knickers. I've never had any horrible reaction, my chuff hasn't dropped off and I'm still very much alive.

RedBananas12 · 11/05/2024 15:36

Never. Unless it's from vinted.

Never pre washed anything, even when the children were a few days old. Didn’t know it was a thing!

llamadrama16 · 11/05/2024 15:40

I wouldn't wear clothes I haven't washed, let alone making my kids (unless we've had to buy new clothes in an emergency situation!). I'm quite sensitive to smells and having worked retail and seen how the clothes come in, I just prefer to wash first.

Irishmama100 · 11/05/2024 15:41

I never started it! Two teens - healthy.
the world has gone mad, how are babies raised in remote tribal African villages.
We are own worst enemies making unnecessary work for ourselves.

I wash clothes before wearing. I don’t know why people care what others do.
