How long should Gastro last?

My son is 4, and on Saturday started complaining of stomach ache, then started vomiting. He started being sick after just drinking water, and he’s only had one wee Sunday, Monday and today.

Took him to GP who referred us up to children’s a&e, we done fluid challenge which he did manage to keep 20ml down over the course of 2 hours and had his first and only wee of the day while we were there so they let us home.

He hasn’t eat since Saturday, and he’s been sick again since coming home from A&E. He isn’t interested in anything, he just sleeps all day and then when he’s awake he’s just lying down staring at the ceiling with no interest. I’m very worried about him - how long does this usually last?

You need to ring 111 and ask advice. My guess would be he needs admission to hospital for rehydration.
Just re read your post... Do you mean he hasn't been sick since coming home ?

EsotericMnemonic · 07/05/2024 23:04

Poor thing. What happens if you do the fluid challenge at home?

lollilou2 · 07/05/2024 23:11

@Wonkywinky sorry, think that was unclear. He wasn’t sick at A&E when he had 20ml of liquid, but he was sick once he was home.

@EsotericMnemonic I’ve been using a syringe to give him 10ml of water every so often. Sometimes he’s sick, sometimes he’s not.

If ours are bad enough for a&e with a sick bug (only ever our eldest) - some kids get stuck in cyclical vomiting apparently - the doctors just given them an anti emetic liquid and keep them in for a few hours to hydrate.

Not familiar with a fluid challenge. Ours have to have 5ml of apple juice every 5 minutes for 2 hours with no vomit, and provide a wee sample, before we're released. Never had to return, the drugs always stop it.

Edit - I'd go back and ask for anti emetics. I believe the GPs can't hand these out, only hospital based doctors.

How is he this morning @lollilou2?

lollilou2 · 08/05/2024 07:38

No sickness through the night! Managed to keep some water down so far ☺️

That's good news. Have you got and squash that you could try, the version with sugar in?

lollilou2 · 08/05/2024 08:24

Ahh that was a lie, he’s just vomited all his water back up 😔 yeah I’ve got some juice, should I try that?

I think I would try juice in your shoes. We always got flat 7up or flat lucozade when we were young and sick - unsure if that's an Irish thing to do but I still do it now eith a vomiting bug. Think the sugar etc is supposed to help

VisitationRights · 08/05/2024 08:30

Did the hospital give you a slip of paper and say to ring that number if he continued to be sick? If so, use it. If not, ring your GP.

lollilou2 · 08/05/2024 08:33

@Hopingtobe4 thank you, it’s worth a try!

@VisitationRights no, they literally said it’s just Gastroenteritis and as long as he is taking fluids and weeing at least once per day he’s fine.

It is the listlessness that is concerning. Does he respond to you, e.g. for a cuddle, to take a bit of the liquid you offer, to get up if sick? These are things you should speak to an HCP about and get their advice.

lollilou2 · 08/05/2024 08:54

Yes, he does respond. Doctor yesterday noted ‘lethargic and tired’ on discharge form but didn’t seem concerned.

Bless him this does sound like a bad case. DD also 4 had a big over the weekend, vomitted once Thursday, once Friday and once Saturday afternoon. Was eating a bit but not much and not much weeing either.

As of yesterday was back eating normally and had been playing since Saturday. I would take him back or ring 111 again. I hope he feels better soon x

Hopingtobe4 · 08/05/2024 20:53

How is your son now @lollilou2 ?

Oneearringlost · 08/05/2024 21:01

Yes, how is he? (And you?)

lollilou2 · 09/05/2024 09:46

Thought he perked up yesterday, actually wanted to watch the iPad and eat half a slice of toast (first thing for ages!) but he started vomiting again through the night and this morning and looks really ill again 😢

In this situation it’s permissible to give him any liquid he’ll drink really, so if he wants a glass of forbidden Coca Cola (stirred to get excess bubbles out), or anything else sugary and it actually gets liquid into him then it’s fine to go for it!

CadyEastman · 09/05/2024 20:58

How is he tonight @lollilou2?

lollilou2 · 10/05/2024 08:13

vomiting seems to have stopped! Still very drained and tired, not eating, but hopefully this is the start of recovery 🙂

I hope so, it sounds like he's really been unwell Flowers
