Do viral infections/bugs really wipe them out this much?

I’m so sorry if this is a stupid question but my 15 month old came down with something Tuesday evening and has just not been himself since. It’s all so new to me because his older brother has a fantastic immune system and whenever he’s been ill he completely bounces back fairly quickly.

Anyway he spent a day being sick on and off and hasn’t been sick now since Thursday night/early Friday morning. He’s had no fever, highest his temp went was 37.8 so not worryingly high at all. He’s had a snotty nose too.

I took him to the doctors Wednesday because the eczema on his chest had gotten 100x worse since he’s been poorly and he gave us antibiotics incase of infection (I’m aware they won’t do anything for viral infections they were given as a precaution for his skin). The doctor did also check his breathing, ears, throat etc and it all looked ok.

Anyway we’re now 6 days on and he’s still utterly miserable, barely eating, barely smiling or laughing, crying a lot, seems exhausted and yet struggles to sleep much. He’s drinking an ok amount but I’m still just worrying sick about him as I’ve never really seen either of my two children seem quite this poorly before.

Is this normal for your bog standard viral infection?

Quite extraordinary how a country that used to do everything possible to avoid antibiotics, now uses them as 'precaution' - a (fake) concept unheard of before the pandemic. Instead of investigating & properly diagnosing a sick baby. If it's viral, the real treatment is antivirals, a word I doubt exists in the English medical dictionary. I hope your little one will get better soon and you won't have to rely on treatments for viruses.

I had a 2 week cold recently. It was a cold, nothing more sinister. It made me miserable and wiped me out.
No reason for a small person to be different.

Yes, it can wipe them out for weeks tbh.

make sure he’s drinking enough - lots of small sips, fruit, ice lollies etc can help and help him to rest and relax.
