Potty Training - Day 1 - HELP!

We’re starting potty training today. Done all the prep, he’s showing the signs, goes on the potty at nursery but he’s absolutely refusing to sit on the potty at home.

We were prepared for accidents but he’s just totally refusing to sit on it. We’ve got reward charts, stickers etc but even they are not enough to get him to actually sit on the potty.

I just don’t know what to do?!

Try a toilet seat instead? One of those toddler ones. With a step. Then its like a grown up/mummy/daddy.

If that doesnt work wait and try again. He may not be ready. Leave potty around and let him sit on it freely for a bit without the pressure.

Echoing the suggestion to try the toilet. Hold him on it at first so he feels safe. Ours virtually skipped the potty stage.

Toilet seat.
Chocolate buttons.
Lots of praise if he goes anywhere near the loo

DD3 was EXACTLY like this. Tried everything (and this was our third time around so we had a few tricks already) This won't be what you want to hear but we just had to wait for her to decide that she wanted to do it. Took about two weeks in all then she suddenly decided that she would prefer not to be wet all the time and that was that. On the plus side we went from that to zero accidents overnight so swings and roundabouts. Hanging there - they will get there.

Thanks everyone. We have some of toilet trainer seats in the loft so will get DH to get them down.

@NoTicket did you persevere with pants or revert to nappies and try again later?

@NameName2023 we were led by her. If she agreed to pants we went with it otherwise nappies

We were in the same situation about a month ago and after 3 days of wiping up wee from the floor we decided to leave it for now.

BugBugTheTornado · 20/04/2024 13:16

My daft arse husband took it upon himself to try potty training our DD on Wednesday. She turned two on Thursday.

He had a Lino floor and the best intentions. He stripped her off, plonked the potty in the middle of the floor and thought 'what can go wrong?'

Well... she pissed on the dog 🙄

TopKat28 · 20/04/2024 13:38

How old is he? Lots of boys are not ready to toilet train until 3. Girls are often ready earlier, but I really don't understand why some parents push it. If you wait until they're ready they have far fewer accidents and it's much less stressful all round.

NameName2023 · 20/04/2024 13:55

@TopKat28 he will be 3 in 2 months. He was showing all the signs and using the potty several times at nursery.

we have had some progress as he actually took his pants down and sat on it but didn’t do anything.

@BugBugTheTornado poor dog! Guessing your husband has decided it wasn’t a good idea?

Wearing pants or nappies when actually in the depths of training is a bit silly, unless you love washing.

We did naked from waist down for the first day at least. By end of day 2 she'd got it and the reward was knickers like her friends. I didnt even buy knickers till then. Had to do a late night dash to sainsburys. Knickers give a bit of a feeling like a nappy so add confusion. I dont actually know anyone who didnt have them naked at the beginning.

By day 3 she was fine. Some small accidents but that was it. By day 4 she was in nursery in knickers and had no accidents.

She was 3. Dry at night too so clearly ready. We'd tried before we lot of challenges. But stopped and left it. Was very easy second time round.
