Who has one and for what reason? What do you have them do during the day? How much do you pay them?

without reliable or able relatives around am looking for someone who can act in loco parentis when I have to travel for work (single mum) just want to know if it’s doable.

You might be better asking what others do in the Teens Section Flowers

I'd look at a 'housekeeper' rather than a 'nanny'. A responsible adult who can be there, keep on top of household jobs etc.

A friend had a housekeeper in a similar set up (a single mum who travelled with work). Housekeeper came each day with a fairly loose brief of cleaning, errands and cooking, she covered evening meals and I believe when kids were younger stayed overnight but once the oldest was 16 plus I think that got cut down but still happened ad hoc. She lived very locally and I believe had kids who'd left home or were young adults and they sometimes stepped in to cover evenings if the housekeeper had something on.

The impression I got from her was it worked because of a lot of flexibility on both sides, so when friend was at home sometimes the housekeeper worked a lot less hours that week in return for much longer hours when she travelled.

Nannies who do proxy parenting (which is what you're describing with travel for work) will typically charge an overnight rate in addition to hours worked in the day. Overnight rates can be about £70, and covers a range like 10pm - 6am. Depending where you are hourly day rates vary, where I am in London they are £16-20 gross.
