I just cannot believe my ds's outburst with his wii this morning

My ds has recently had a wii.
Playing on it this morning he had the most terrible outburst when he couldn't win.

The remote and the upchuck got thrown on the floor and he went into floods of real tears.
He was so upset.

I turned the wii of and told him to calm down
which seemed to make things worse and he flew into a almighty rage calling me an idiot, and selfish.

I have now banned it for the rest of the day.
It as created such a unpleasant atmosphere
as I am really angry with him for his attitude.
The truth is that he has never been a good loser, trying to play a game is torture he cheats like crazy to try and win, and throws a strop if he doesn,t.
He is 7.
Please tell me he is not the only one that is like this.

More seriously, it isn't nice, and it sounds like you are dealing with it sensibly. I remember upending a monopoly board at about aged 7, when I realised i had no money left after landing on my dads properties... He is certainly not the only one.

I was sent to my room btw.

Completely normal.

DS1 is 11 now and is getting slightly better at losing.

The only thing that helped was to limit the amount of time he could go on it - it seems much more real to him if that makes sense and he gets intensely involved in it

My DS is 5 and exactly the same. I carried him out of the room screaming in front of 2 of his friends once .

every time he loses it with the Wii we have to have the conversation about people not wanting to play with people who are bad losers/winners. I think it is slowly sinking in, if only because that he has finally realised that if he loses his temper with a game (golf in particular) that he plays worse and worse.

In positive mode I think it is better that he learns these lessons in a "safe" environment at home with the Wii than at school / clubs where it would get him a bad reputation in no time flat.

In negative mode I want to take it away and never give it back.

my 8.5 yo and nearly 6 yo boys are both exactly like this esp with wii......wish we hadn't bought it tbh, however I think it is whet they call"horribly normal"

p.s our wii is regularly banned for 24 hrs at a time

ds is mostly v sensible about the wii, but if he plays it when he's tired all hell can let loose. he's 6.

We are having a TV-free week (since Saturday) due to 7yo stroppiness. Quite peaceful, actually.

Sounds very much like my dh,who often claims that the game is 'cheating him'.

I send him out in the garden with a cold beer, this usually does the trick.
If his behaivour continues it's restricted priveleges until he can learn how to lose graciously

My dh has an xbox and likes to let ds have a play. Every time he does it ends up exactly as you described.

OP's comments really rang a bell with me. DS1 is also 7 and every time something goes against him I'm "selfish" to. Proper tantrums and real tears and we don't even have a wii.

My dh's family taunt him with stories of what a bad loser he used to be. We don't own a chess set - he seems to have an involuntary reflex to throw the set out of the window when he loses. The hatred of losing seems to have pushed him to be a high achiever - i think it is a version of being ambitious. He's straight As all the way - with a bit of a weak point that he gets very grumpy if he thinks he's underperforming.

Oh - and he was (is) very into computer games. Now earns his living in front of a screen - reckons computer games were better training than school for problem solving and concentrating.

My DSs of 10 and 8 regulary through wobbilies on the PSP/PS3 but a few 'console free weeks' persueded them to contain these wobbilies

Ds (5) and Dd2 (8) are both like this, they are such bad losers.

We have a rule now that if they have a tantrum over a game, the wii goes off and they are banned for 24 hours.

I also do the same with Ds's DS, although he is limited to an hour a day with that anyway, but he knows that if he has a tantrum when I say switch it off, or he is losing, then it gets confiscated for 24 hours.

Ihave just banned wii playing for 24hrs as DS's nearly 6 and 8 have started fighting over sonic/mario olympics race thingy as DS2 came last...have thrown them into the garden to work together taking down some trellis, right now DS2 is chasing DS1 with plastic shovel and bucket of compost....ahhhh bless 'em

I am a bit like this as well

I remember when I was a child we used to play cricket on the beach. I would insist on batting first, then when I got out I would insist on bowling and then I wouldn't play any more.
