Toddler persistent cough 24/7 - any advice?

Does anyone have experience of their little one having a dry hoarse barking cough that just won’t go away? My DS 17 months old gets a cough whenever he gets a cold (which seems to be every couple of weeks through the winter) but then even after the cold clears up the cough lingers for weeks. Sometimes it then goes away for a little while but as soon as there’s another cold, the cough comes back and stays for weeks and weeks. He coughs literally constantly through the day and night, disturbing his and our sleep (it’s impossible not to hear it on the monitor and through the wall to bedroom all night). I feel so sorry for him and wish I could help.
we have been to the doctor and consultant paediatrician so many times and they don’t seem worried, they just said it’s common for little ones to get recurrent coughs. He had a chest x ray, results all clear. No allergies (had testing done in London) although I wonder if we should experience t with removing dairy. He was breastfed until age 1 but on cows milk since then (plus normal solids).
I would be so happy to hear from anyone with exeperience of this as I’m just sitting awake hearing him cough for the 15th night in a row.

Thank you for reading.

I'd be interested to know how you have got on? My nearly 1 year old seems to have had a cough and runny nose for the last 8 weeks. We can't seem to shift it. Did you do anything that worked or did your GP have any idea what it was?
