To not allow my 9 year old kid travel on the bus with her mates (same age), to visit leisure centre nearby. When I say nearby it's two towns away... I don't travel by bus and have offered to drop off and pick kids up but it's being met with resistance. They want to do bus journey there and back, and a trip to maccys. I'm more weary of other folks rather than how she'd be.

How much autonomy do you give kids these days?

I wouldn't allow that no. I did my first trip without an adult at that age and that was just a 5 min walk to Woolworths, buying some sweets then coming home. And that was in the 90s when kids had more freedom! At age 11 or 12 I started doing bus journeys alone.

9 is too young in my opinion!

I'd say 11 for this.

Speedy replies really welcomed - thank you! I feel it's too young and as I've explained she has so much time for that later on. Other parents must not feel the same way so I think we appear to be in minority. I don't care for that, I'd rather she was learning with me here

No.
Too young

I wouldn't let my 9 year old do that. Think I was 11 or 12 before taking the bus alone/with friends and that's probably the age I'd feel comfortable with DD doing it

Dinoswearunderpants · 05/04/2024 16:22

"Being met with resistance"... be the bloody parent and say no. 9 is far too young.

jackstini · 05/04/2024 16:34

No. Minimum senior school age. Mine were 12

9 is much too young and also too young to go to the leisure centre without being supervised by an adult.
