5.5 month old is not sleeping well, fights sleep.

My LO is 5.5 month old and has mostly been not a great sleeper. He used to sleep through noise and in a bright room until he was 6 weeks old but after that he became very much aware of the surrounding and used to get up even with a tiny bit of noise. He also had colic until 3 months so his sleep was all over the place. Meanwhile I had already started on some nap time and bedtime routine. He started sleeping quite well at night. I used to get 6 hours sometimes even 8 if I was luck y with at night but that lasted just for 2 weeks or so and we were kind of preparing for the 4 month regression but when he was 3.5 months he learned to roll from his back to tummy so nights became worst cos he used to roll and get stuck, but that wasn’t bad. It was just that we had ti get up frequently to roll him on his back but in few seconds he used to go back to sleep.
My biggest issue has been naps. I has been a chronic catnapper. I have read through baby sleep blogs multiple times and tried everything that was suggested, white noise, black out curtains, age appropriate awake times, following sleepy cues.
I have even tried to extend his sleep but it would make him even more awake.

It’s been weeks since myself and my husband had had a good night sleep or even a day nap. My LO would get up every 2 hours. His bedtime normally would be at 6 and he would be up in the morning by 7. But throughout the night he would get up either cos he has rolled on his tummy or he is hungry or just for no reason at all.

My concern is that he is not getting enough sleep, with only 2 hours of day sleep divided in 4 naps, I try to push bedtime early so he gets more sleep at night but he gets up so frequently and sometimes it takes me more than 90 minutes to put him back to his sleep in his cot.

Since the colic pains have gone away he is a very happy baby, even with his 30 maps he gets up pleasant (not always though, but mostly). It’s just by the end of the day he looks extremely tired, he gets fussy but does not cry hysterically. From everywhere that I have read, it says that it’s difficult to settle an overtired baby. He does fight sleep, but would settle down in 10 mins.

I just don’t understand what am I doing wrong, why are his naps only 30 mins (max 40). Today after almost a month he had 1.5 hours of his first nap, and the next were 30 mins and 20 mins, both of which I tried to extend cos I looked tired but no success. And after his third nap he was so tired for his bedtime. Right now it’s 11 pm and he slept well atleast until 12am but today we got 7 times since we put him to bed which was at 6 pm. He was fed once at 8 and diapers changed. But he would not sleep. He is yawning and eyes are red and so heavy with sleep but he would not sleep. He is crying but just awake.

My husband and I am going nuts mostly because both of us have limited our routin on a lot of things just for his naps and his sleep and the end of being so careful and still if he is overtired (if this is what it is) we don’t know what to do. Any guidance any advice would be greatly appreciated.
