I want to buy a water based toy for an older child with autism, the child is around 13/14 and i don't know a lot about autism but I know they enjoy water play.

An Aquaplay set perhaps?

colouredball · 24/03/2024 22:24

Yeah I wouldn't get a child's toy for a teenager based on them being autistic Confused

Have a look on “Hooded Owls”. My autistic son loves playing with their bath sets.

How does autism affect him?
The majority of people who are autistic have age appropriate hobbies so a set of kayak lessons, voucher for an aqua pool session etc.

If he also has a developmental delay then depending on the age his interests maybe an aqua play set, bath crayons.

If he likes baths then bubble bars, bath bombs from lush or similar

Water beads, Gelli bath and slime bath sets are great fun can be used either in the bath or brilliant for outdoor play in the paddling pool.

Er, I have an autistic 13 yr old who really enjoys our Aquaplay sets (we have 2 that can be connected). I didn't pull the idea out of my arse Hmm

@DuIcieDomum

Right, but you must realise all autistic 13 year olds are not the same?

Mine would look at you like you have 2 heads if you handed them a child's toy.

No, that literally never occurred to me, I thought every single autistic person liked the same stuff. Are you saying we're all individuals or something??

But seriously, based on OP saying "he enjoys water play" and asking for recommendations for a "water based toy" - it sounds a lot like a toy for water play is what is wanted in this particular instance. So I suggested a toy for water play, based on what my water-play-loving autistic 13 year old enjoys.

My 11 year old was recently given a pack of water beads and she's played with them a lot. She's making fidget toys out of them using balloons.

I'm planning to use them in the garden once she gets bored!

Colour changing bubble light.

You really need to know more about him than “he’s autistic” and “likes water”.

If he’s autistic with lower support needs (in a mainstream school) then he’d probably like a nerf water pistol, or a nerf cornhole game set.

If he’s austistic with higher support needs (special needs school) then he may prefer toys aimed at younger children - what’s your budget like? You could go big with a water play wall, water table or aqua play, or you could go smaller with bath bombs, bath colour changers, etc

To the people 'you need to know more about them' 'if theyre 14 they're not a child they are teens'

I am simply trying to surprise the child with a gift, they are a family friends child and I don't know in detail about how autistic they are but i do know they love water and have child-like hobbies.

To those who gave me suggestions thank you, I have now purchased a few of the suggestions.

To those who comment just to be rude. Im glad you lead such fabulous and interesting lives.
