Furious at son for stupid hitch hiking idea

Organised hitch hiking group of students by the university apparently called Bumm It - stupid name for a stupid idea.

He is 19. They have preventative measures but nothing that actually stops them being attacked. Anyone have any experiences of hitch hiking across France and Spain?? Please share.

Not France or Spain but all around Ireland and the North East of America (New Hampshire and Maine mostly). Loved it and met amazing people. Pre-mobile phone era so no maps to track where we were or ways to call anyone, but never needed it.
