Please help me sort out my buggy dilemma, now that I have 2 kids

We have DS1 who just turned 2, and DS2 who is 4 weeks old.

We have the following:
• Joie buggy, bulky but I like that DS2's newborn car seat plonks ontop for quick nipping in shops/appointments. Can be used from birth
• Babyzen yoyo, our main buggy. Can be used from 6months

Now that we have a newborn on the scene, I dont know how to sort buggies with 2. Our options:

  1. Sling for newborn and keep toddler in pushchair. I dont think this is feasible longterm. Also, as weather will be getting warmer, combined with my hormones which haven't settled, I will be a hot sweaty mess so dont wanna overheat the baby in a sling
  2. Double pushchair.
We'd get one 2nd hand, but would I be able to buy adaptors to still plonk the newborn carseat on top?
  1. Buggy board
As DS1 is an energetic one, we would have to get a seat with straps. But would need one compatible with both the joie and yoyo, as newborn can go into the yoyo from 6months.

Am I overthinking this?
When we bought our yoyo, we were so impressed with it that we regretted buying the joie initially. But we kept the joie for future babies, for the sole function of plonking the newborn car seat ontop to stop them waking.

I'd love your thoughts on how best to approach this matter. Fyi, as weather will be improving, we do go to parks and walks often, as well as babygroups...we do get out is what I'm trying to say so the most £££ option would be worth it.

City mini gt double. I used my single with car seat for short car to buggy journeys but pushed that city mini miles and it was a second hand one from Facebook
I just lifted the baby out of car seat and put in the buggy.
I did initially try a buggy board but it was so hard to push and eldest still wanted to nap in buggy. I also tried the sling with baby option, wasn’t easy either

How much walking do you do? And is your 2 yo just two or nearly 3?
I never really used the buggy much beyond 2.5 but I have a car.

If your going out as a family taking both buggies might be an idea.
If you do decide you need a double go second hand and it will probably come down to what's available rather than what is your preference

It very much depends on your life I think.
How much walking do you do where you need to get somewhere (as opposed to walking where there's no rush)? Do you need to think about long term? DD2 is 22 months and we rarely use the pram - just if she has to be taken on the school run with DD2, or occasionally at the weekend. Generally she walks.
DD1 never went in the pram after about 2.5.

Double. Worth it's weight in gold when the eldest is whingy, it's bad weather or you're in a rush. More storage for coats, snacks, shopping etc. And it'll do you for next winter too.
Mine are teens and I still miss the double buggy when I'm shopping.

DeathMetalMum · 19/03/2024 07:37

Double. I had similar age gap and having them both strapped in was a godsend. Occasionally they would both fall asleep in the pram at the same time! - dd1 hardly napped at 2.

Buy second hand, treat it almost like a rental. We used ours for just over six months and sold it for almost what we paid. Moved onto a buggy board after, dd1 was just a bit too young for that at 2 but fine at 2 1/2.

It depends on how you use it. If you walk for more than ten minutes outside it’s different than if you want something to mooch round shops. Personally I’d use this time while the baby isn’t running to teach your eldest how to walk with you and save yourself the grief of trying to do both at once. Mine held onto the side of the pushchair fairly reliably from about 2.5.

I would (and did) get a double buggy. Ours was very useful esp for long days out.

Scarletttulips · 19/03/2024 07:43

You can get a buggy board with a seat on it -

Depends on naps as well. If you go out do you work round a 2 year old nap?

colourfulcrochet · 19/03/2024 07:45

You've got at least a year, maybe 2, of them both needing a buggy on walks, at least part of the time. Look into a double buggy and sell off one of your singles to help fund it. Use the other single and the sling on days where you'll be slowly ambling along or down at the park, when the toddler gets out to play or look at flowers/bugs/ducks you can pop baby in the buggy for their own view of the world while you chase after the toddler or push the swing. Double buggy for busier days out when you need to walk fast, pack more snacks, grab the milk and bread, etc.

hernsam · 19/03/2024 08:57

We just had a Yoyo with a newborn pack, and the Yoyo car seat and toddler walked everywhere once baby was born. You can't use the car seat for too long with a newborn though. We had a Yoyo buggy board but didn't often use it as it made the buggy hard to push. Toddler obviously stopped napping while we were out and about with no buggy to nap in, which worked out well for us as it meant they had earlier bedtimes.
